I have a serious problem with my internet.

Every 20-30 minutes it drops off. Well not drop off but goes out of sync. Then i have to Log off or restart the computer to make it work. Then the cycle continues again. It pisses me off.

The modem doesn't disconnect nor the does the connection drop. My modem is a Netgear. It's connected to my computer but transmits to a wireless USB receiver.

E.g. I'm on a webpage, go AFK, come back and the internet doesn't work.

I'm with Optus and i have ADSL2+ or at least i think i do. I have called multiple times but to no avail. I even suggested the modem could be faulty but they dismissed that. They phone line isolation tests and some guy even managed to give me 500kbp/s extra somehow.

I hope some of you techie guys can help me out.

There's a few things it could be, all of them software related, because you've eliminated the modem.

Short, easy solution - backup your computer and reformat, solves the problem because you start from a clean slate.

I had a problem similar to this recently with a customer's computer, so we'll try that solution first:
Assuming you're using Windows XP, go to Control Panel -> Network Connections, in the menu (File, Edit, etc) go to Advanced, then Advanced Settings, select your LAN connection (or Wireless, whatever) then untick both 'Bindings for LAN'...
Then go to Device Manager (easiest way is to right click on My Computer, left click on Manage, then left click Device Manager on the left hand side), click the plus next to 'Network Adapters', then right-click and uninstall whichever adapter you use.
You can then 'scan for hardware changes' but personally I prefer to restart the computer and let it rediscover your device.

Let me know how it goes - if it doesn't work, we'll try the miriad of other options.

Alright ill try that.

EDIT: Ok did that, internet takes 1/2-1 second extra to connect to a link. Thats ok. Lets see if it d/c's. Also i was shocked when the internet worked with the USB adapter uninstalled. Thanks Tendrils.

You're using a USB modem? Just trying to figure out exactly what's going on...

Are you using torrents or any other downloading program, or just browsing/email? I don't think it'll make a difference in this instance, but it's something else to ponder.

Torrents create a massive amount of TCP connections - which can cause problems (though with decent equipment it shouldn't).
eg. I got a free NB5 modem from my ISP when I joined... binned it because it locked up after a short while when torrenting.
Not really relevant to your problem, though, unless your problem doesn't appear when you're not torrenting.

So yeah, back to the point... uhhh, I've got nothing right now.
You've cleared your equipment, it doesn't appear to be messed up TCP/IP settings/stack, firewall type problems generally screw all connectivity, not 'after x minutes'...

What modem are you using?

Ok..well first i have no firewalls up, and only nod32.

My modem is DG834GSP v3, which is 'custom' made by optus.

the firmware is modded by optus thats all.

are you SURE its not the modem?? a computer wont go out of sync, a modem does. try also changing your line filters on the phones

another thing, update the drivers to your network card (if youre using ethernet) if not try updating the USB drivers for that modem.

if its ethernet, it might not be re-issuing the DHCP lease when the pc requests it, and then it gets a 169 address.
