Gday all.. just wanted to introduce myself since I'll probably be racking your brains about everything silvia. I'm 19, live in Sydney near the airport, love my cars.. Not your normal member of a silvia forum since I drive somehting fairly opposite - an EA falcon 5spd MPI with the usual mods - lowered, tint, stereo, cat back, FTR rims.. pulls some sick skids but thats about it :)

Anyway reason I joined is because I wanted to make the falcon into a real quick car - snort turbo kit, AU motor with low compression, whiteline suspension, strengthened LSD, box, clutch etc etc. Anyway, this build would probably cost 15-20k on a 1700$ car and the result not as quick as a light jap car.

So i'm considering about going an s13 sr20det and building it into a tough streeter that would also see action at the track in drift or drag. Value for money I don't think it can be beaten - light, sr20det power, and a great aftermarket. Anyway, I don't know much about silvias so thats why I joined the forum.

welcome aboard

I think you have the right idea. For 10-15k you will be able to find a well sorted s13 that has plenty of go to keep you happy along with suspension for handling

best of luck with it all, keep us updated!

yeh i think it is a wiser decision re performance abilities of the two. Definately want to give drifting a go and the silvia is probably the best car to do this in IMO. Circuit would be fun too and these things can handle.

Only thing worrying me is that the falcon is tough as nails, whereas the silvia's 2 liter engine worries me a bit, as does only 4 cylinders. Especially on an older car like the s13, I don't know if it would be as reliable as the mighty falcon. Any ideas?

Plus, I MUST get over the rice stereotype I give all you boys if I'm to drive one.. just can't get a 6'4 aussie bloke behind a small jap car through my head though.

I also notice the older s13s with the CA turbo engines (1.8 or 2.0 i don't know).. obviously the sr20dets are newer and better but how much better? worth the extra bit? I'm really concerned about reliability since i do like to occasionally go to the red line also..

One last question, in my quest to drive something a bit unique/non ricer i was considering going the s12/gazelle. It is ca powered so I presume an sr20det would go in without too much hassle and the s13 loom/ecu could run it all. Is the chassis shared between it and the later model silvias? So that suspension/box/diff etc would be interchangeable? Or am I wasting my time and might as well just go the proven s13.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice..

also I haven't decided on silvia for sure yet, still open to other options.. For the purposes outlined, what are your opinions on the s13 compared to say the r33 gtst, ae86 4age 20v. IMO the ae86 is a bit old for my likings and too initial D stereotype, and the skyline a bit heavy and has the 'hektik' stereotype. Plus has been done wayyyy too many times.

Nissan engines are some of the most reliable motors around.

cylinder count has nothing to do with the strength (reliability strength) of a motor.

id go s13

if your concerned that youll get a dud s13 or 86 because there too old why would you get an S12 even worse

if you can afford it id go SR20 (SR20=2L, CA18= 1.8 the numbers in all nissan engines repesent size) theres nothing too bad about a CA but because they are older there is alot less aftermarket support

im not ethinic at all so ricer images are just ones that people that have know idea about the car. when i first bought it my mates parents told me they didnt like it because it looked like a lebenese car

being 6'4" you might have to get one with no sunroof and/or a aftermarket seat with superlow rails im roughly 6" and have a s13 with a sunroof and s15 seats in it and my head is just below the roof maybe 1" if that so i have to put my head at an angle to fit in with a helmet  but i fit fine with a helmet in my 180 in stock seats

honestly bang for buck i dont think theres anything much better than a s13/180sx light, RWD, turbo, with aftermarket suport ranging from cheap chinese s*** to topself japanese tuning companys products

lebo stylez or proper seat? I'm 6'3 and i can't fit comfortably in a sunroof model. With a helmet forget it. With a proper bucket non sunroof no probs

My Falcon ute is good for towing and carting shit around. not much else.

nah normal seating

with a helmet on it was a little uncomfortable for me in a sunroof 180 but without a sunroof it was fine :)

ive used bride's, s13 and s15 seats and no problems

aha well yeh i've never been in one, i'm 6'4 though and they are kinda small cars from the looks of things. I guess the no sunroof model would be the go for me. Anyway, thanks for your opinions, keeping an eye out for anything that fits the bill and learning a bit more about them.

Who said the falcon ute was only good for towing?? 3500 revs and dropping the clutch is nice, as is putting it into first around a turn and flooring the pedal.. ;)
