Yea. I got all my equipment for cost price, however with the cables he wasn't prepared to budge.

I'll get two cheap ass HDMI cables and one Monster cable. Then I'll swap them around and try different combinations to see if there's any noticeable quality improvements.

jaycar will have what you need on a budget. DONT let anyone tell you a $250 3m HDMI cable is better than the $35 one you get from jaycar. youll never notice the difference.

Its a digital connection. There will either be signal, or no signal. buy $20 cables and dont even bother with monster.

even analog cables, the difference between a $10 and $1000 cable are going to be only slightly noticeable, if at all.

you just want to shoot cops in the head!

On the cabling issue, i had to run both HDMI and optical out on the play station as my amp won't accept an hdmi sound input (even though it will daisy chain the hdmi which is worthless imho. It's specifically so it can shut of the picture signal as well if the right input isn't selected on the amp) I also had to manually select 5.1 out on the play station as it wouldn't auto detect. This is with a sony amp as well.....

the pc is running a converter cable which has hdmi and goes straight to the TV, the sound card has optical out and goes straight into the other slot on the amp. Still having problems getting the computer outputing 5.1 even though it is a 7.1 capable card, but i get stereo which is enough for the moment as the amp will automatically drive the subs in that situation.

Man the warehouse was closed on Sat/Sun due to religious reasons!!! So I never got the chance to watch the F1 race in HD over the weekend :(

Anyways, fingers crossed it gets delivered today.

Sorry I just have a few more questions:

What do you mean by daisy chain?

I've read that my amp "will only act as an HDMI switcher, not a decoder". What does this mean? I just bought two HDMI cables from Jaycar but do I also have have to run optical as well?

Also, my system is 6.2, is that selectable on the PlayStation 3?

Cheers.

daisy chaining is basically what you've said. The amp is a switcher only in this case. So you run a hdmi to the amp and one from the amp to the TV. If the amp isn't on the right input it won't output to the tv.

Yes, you will need an optical. Or you can run your hdmi cable to the tv and that will do sound but the amp won't.

Despite the amp being 6.2 the subs are still treated as mono and the center rear isn't supported. You'd think sony would support their own gear wouldn't you :roll: . just select one of the 5.1 options, either dolby or DTS, i can't remember which it takes.

hmmm. Is it a limitation of that particular Amp Dave?

HDMI is supposed to carry both audio and video. Why would the amp not support sound via HDMI?

Perhaps you can run the HDMI for both sound and audio directly to the TV, but connect the TV's optical out to the amp via optical cable. This would be the neatest way I guess, as you are going to want to run the TV broadcast sound via the amp anyway...

at least that way you always get what youre watching coming out of the stereo. that way you dont have to change 2 inputs when you want ps3, then change again to tv etc..........

Interesting.....

Thanks for the help.

Damn looks like I have to get yet another cable. Just to confirm, does the X Series has optical out? From the specs on the Sony website it only says this:

Terminals
* HDMI Input: x3
* Component In: x2
* S-Video in: x2
* Composite in: x3
* Headphone Out: x1
* HD15 / PC Audio Input: x1

I have to admit, I simply assumed the TV had optical out.

Since it has a HD Tuner, and broadcasters are now broadcasting in with digital dolby - if it doesn't have optical out (or perhaps coaxial out), its difficult to transmit 5.1 sound to your amp.

I have the much cheaper Samsung version of the TV and it has optical out... sorry if it was a bad assumption.

Oh man, I just read that you haven't even received your TV / HIFI yet... 7 day delivery - isn't that driving you nuts?

When I bought my LCD, I took it down, chucked it in the back of a stationwagon taxi and was enjoying it to its fullest 30 minutes later! LOL
