ok so i called them for my SmartUPS 1500. $490 for a replacement battery. hmmm maybe i can live without it at home. yeah i cant it seems. ebay yields similar and lower prices, but still more than i want to spend. shit ic an get a whole new UPS for that price! ok its not APC but it will work

anyway, opening up the UPS to check out what batteries it takes. SLA 18A block things. wow ive seen these before at jaycar, yes jaycar.

they are $45 retail each, i got them slightly cheaper due to my trade card (couldnt wait for wholesale delivery) and got a new battery for my UPS for $80 :)

how the hell can a company like that charge so much for a simple fucking SLA???

it's because they hate you.

I run those very same batteries in my cars too. Beats paying hundreds for an Odyssey :)

There seems to be a huge markup on APC UPS's in general. The cost price for that particular battery through ingrammicro is $287

We have actually found that it is cheaper to buy the APC UPS's brand new through Dell, rather than going straight through APC - as a side note.

the biggest SLA on jaycar i could find was CAT. NO. SB2490 "18.0 AMP HOUR 12V SEALED LEAD ACID BATTERY", is this the one your using or is this sufficient for a car ?

says it has a max discharge of 100A over 5 seconds, seems plenty for cranking !

So you can just keep adding batteries in parallel to the existing UPS ?

AFAIK you can get the addon battery packs. it plugs into the back of the unit. i can probably just make something with a bank of batteries. there are 2 18v SLAs in series, making 36v so if i just add a few pairs (maybe 2 more pairs) i should be able to get 3x the standard backup capability.

ill investigage more when i can actually think properly

'cause they're bought by numpty purchasing officers from large corporations who simply don't give a toss about how much it costs most of the time.
About the only thing you've got to watch with stacking a lot of them in parallel (more than the box usually comes with) is that the cycle time after a discharge is longer, so if you cop another outage very quickly after a long outage you won't have that safety net.

/bored network admin... f*ck, who else would up at this time of night at work :D
