Hey peoples,

I know a fair amount about technology, however I don't always claim to be an expert.
And as such before spending my hard earned I like to be fully informed.

I'm after a new TV, as my current one is 50Hz :/
Inputs:
Xbox 360

Basically I don't buy a TV very often; so I want this thing to be fking good & actually last a while - so no use buy a generation or technology behind..

Size is Approx. 68cm - Limited by Cabinet/Shelf space.
And speakers don't matter as I have a surround setup already..

Any advice or help would be appreciated - I realise that this is a car forum.. but hey, it is in off-topic :D !

Sorry - I just cannot resist - RTFM!

(www.google.com ==> buying a tv)

ok seriously. I've been looking at a new TV for a few months now. No real reason, my current TV does a good job, but its CRT and no way near as sexy as a LCD or Plasma.

btw, sexy TV's are not cheap these days - look to spend between $2000-$5000. Of course depending on what size and what technology you want.

This is one of those times where bigger is better...

I started of looking at 32" LCD's, then they start to look small.. so move up to 37", then wow, 40" isn't much more expensive... then you check out the 50" plasmas - and you're like YUM PLEASE!

Lots of people will argue about LCD v's plasma. I actually think LCD technology is come up to plasma standard pretty well, they are more expensive though. If you want top of the line, you want one that support 1080p. (however most people will be happy with 1080i)

once you decide, lets us know, as I cannot decide either... LOL

If you want something thats not going to be out of date in the next year, get a display that has HDMI inputs, preferably a few of them. Its the clearest connection out now, and its only just starting to become mainstream in cheaper devices.

Google is not a manual, it may be helpful but never - EVER blindly trust it.
Id much rather information from a community of people I know.

As I mentioned im stuck at around 26-27" due to the Cabinet the TV will be housed in.

LCD currently offers greater picture quality than plasma - just plasma is cheaper as its an aging technology.

I would like top of the line, but I don't necessarily know what that is, thus I ask.

I've got an LCD and for the size your looking at I reckon it has it's advantages. For one, you can plug your laptop/PC into it and use it as a monitor - play games, watch movies, etc

Definately the bigger you want and the more fast action (sport) you'll be watching, then plasma is the go. But for the small sizes I reckon LCD FTW!

In that size you would definitely go for LCD. I am not even sure if you can get plasma in that size.

from the researching that I have done in LCD TV's Sony and Samsung seem to be leading the way - though I did hear a rumour that Samsung had a recall recently (similar issue to LG)

You should be able to get away with spending less then $1500.

This one is quite nice http://www.sony.com.au/homecinema/catal ... ryId=22400 though I am not sure if it has a built in tuner.

It has HDMI as Ark previously suggested.

Will make your xbox360 look tops!

360 uses HDMI, so that part i knew :) but is there anything else to look for?

Like resolution
Refresh rate
etc

If so not really fused, free to air sucks bollocks..

yes resolution is a BIG factor. remember that plasma screens that are 32" and under $2000 are probably 480p and no digital tuner

make sure its got an internal digital tuner, at LEAST 1 HDMI input, 1366x768 would have to be the lowest resolution that i would even look at. 6-8ms response time for an LCD is great, around 12ms is good and anything like 16ms is shithouse and will ghost all over when playing games.

measure the tv before you buy it to make sure it WILL fit in your cabinet.

all the decent models now come with digital tuners anyway, so you probably wont have a choice lol

the sony bravia x-series is good. but lately i think sony build quality sucks ass. my flagship DVR of theirs has bugs galore that they think dont exist. im planning on taking it back and getting the LG one, or maybe something else with a better brand name.

my panasonic 32" LCD cost me 2k, has only 1 HDMI and 1 comonant input :( but built in digital tuner. this was last year tho. its since been replaced by a similar model with 2 HDMI and a whole range of componant inputs.

I bought my new tv around 2 months ago, damn happy with it!

32" Samsung R series LCD (5000:1 contrast, 8ms, HD tuner, game mode, hdmi) use it with the PS2 , 360, PC, DVD/HD DVD, TV  (something like $1400 with free postage, 3 years warranty - thanks ebay!)

then picked up the logitech 5.1 z-5450's (500+ wrms, thx thumbs up) system for $400 delivered.

= kickass cheap setup

I have my old tv sitting here if your interested, 68cm sony trinitron flatscreen with rear speaker attachment.
