EDIT BT

Jin's thread has turned into a general movie thread of some sorts, as has some others, so I think it's appropriate to re-name this thread. Please post all your reviews, complaints, etc here!

Dear all,

I have seen some of the big movies such as 300, shooter, spider man 3 and etc, and so far to be honest I am disappointed with the overall quality of the movies. Maybe its all the big hype of the movies or maybe it generally sucks. I can even seen ocean 13 being a flop too. I* seriously dont c any movies to match some of the movies that we have had in the past such as lord of the rings and etc. Maybe die hard 4.0 is going to be alright for the sore eyes. We shall c.

Depends what you're after. The big budget Hollywood movies are always overhyped and although they can be good, your expectations are usually higher.

I'm hanging for 28 Weeks Later this Thursday, the sequel to 28 Days Later. That was a great movie.

Are you kidding?! I guess you should try to avoid judging a movie by its trailer, but it looks like a blasphemous use of the Die Hard title. I'm an absolute Die Hard fanatic, but this time Bruce Willis looks pretty much dead, and sounds like it too. :x

There's a difference between a flop and a shit movie too.

Plenty of good movies flop, and plenty of shit movies do well (like the 3 new starwars movies)

If you're disappointed with big budget hollywood then I'd suggest you start looking for arthouse, foreign or other non-mainstream movies.
I watch quite a few movies, always on the lookout for new/old any interesting movies.

Yeah, I saw Spiderman 3, but didn't get anything particularly different to what I expected - great action and special effects with a poorly acted love plot. The surprise for me were bits like Bruce Campbell's Maitre d' character.

Other than that, the most recent movies I've seen are Dick Tracy, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Tenacious D: The Pick Of Destiny, Van Wilder 2 (don't bother), Running With Scissors, Little Miss Sunshine, The Departed, The Last Kiss (don't bother), A Scanner Darkly, Bra Boys, Blood Diamond (an excellent movie), Notes On A Scandal, Turistas (GREAT horror), School For Scoundrels (ugh), The Illusionist, The Queen, Severance, Arthur And The Invisibles (I don't stop watching many movies, but had to draw the line with that one)... there's plenty of names there, see if you can find something you like.

Movies I want to see include: Stranger Than Fiction, Idiocracy, Plane Dead, The Last King Of Scotland, Suburban Mayhem, 2:37, The Prestige, The Painted Veil, The Fountain.

Got a bit carried away there, but hopefully you'll find some movies in that massive list that tickle your fancy :)

a lot of so-called block-busters are content-poor and hype-rich,but you can't always depend on independant or foreign films for quality either.
occasionally, big name stuff shines through as well. you mentioned the lord of the rings movies, all three WERE great. and other trilogies aren't so good, like the afformentioned latest star wars movies.

I don't think we're in a major rut atm, the departed wasn't in the movies all that long ago,and that was pretty good. the pursuit of happyness was very good I thought. 300 wasn't bad,I watched it on dvd last weekend. The order of the phoenix comes out in july, that'll likely be worth a look.

of course, there's always personal preference to consider.
what one person loves, another can't stand.
I love sci-fi,war films and the odd drama primarily. my best mate loves ALL the star wars movies. my boss can't bear to watch anime. my mother likes disney films. everyone is different.

Having said that though,I can't work out how you said that 300 was crap on one hand, but then expect something like die hard 4 to be quality?
there are limits to what you can expect will be good entertainment, and what is obviously an excuse to try and sell tickets to make a studio some cash during the slow parts of the year.

by the time you're of voting age, most films you can pick by the promo material alone if they'll be worth watching or not. the plotlines become fairly formulaic and in many cases, cliched, and it becomes pretty easy to pick which films are 'in the tradition of' stuff like 'are we there yet?' and which ones are more like 'trading places'. or the difference between 'navy seals' and 'saving private ryan'.

here's 10 movies off the top of my head (in no particular order) that I doubt will disappoint you, give them a go and get back to me:

*master and commander
*coming to america
*the village
*sanjuro
*spirited away
*telephone
*underworld
*alien
*ronin
*the interview
