my windows media player wont work it comes up saying "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assistance, click Web Help."
so i clicked it and it says "You've encountered error message C00D11B1" You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

Your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller, requires an updated driver. To determine if an updated driver is available, see Windows Update at the Microsoft Web site, or see the sound device manufacturer's Web site.

Your sound device is not functioning properly. Try using Device Manager to check the status of your sound device.
The sound device is fine i checked that n i tried to see if an updated driver was available by clicking the link n it came up sayin i needed some other program but it didnt help.
Any 1 out there can help me? im a bit baffled
Thanx jason.

It came up saying

Install the ActiveX control required to view the website
The website will not display correctly on your computer without this control. To install it:
1. Right-click the Internet Explorer Information Bar. It's located just below the address bar.
2. In the right-click menu, click Install ActiveX Control.
3. In the Security Warning dialog box, click Install.

so i installed it and it wouldnt let me veiw the page still

Open Internet Explorer

Tools… Internet Options… Advanced

Go through the list and look for anything that stop you for browsing sites that have ActiveX controls.

Is this a work PC or a home PC because it sounds like something is blocking it from running ActiveX content. Might pay to reboot after install but shouldn't be necessary.

If you go to Control Panel… Security Centre.. Automatic Updates…Is the recommended setting selected for automatic?

Well.. this seems like a weird problem.. i don't use Windows Media Player myself (i hate that piece of sh*& program) but i'd presume it would be down to a number of things.

1: Your sound card drivers require a more updated version in order to use this newer version of media player correctly (using its newer codecs or whatever). Note: Updating your sound card drivers should just be done by searching specifically for your sound card drivers via google or your sound card's official site (the manufacturer will supply up to date drivers for your sound card and usually utilities too).

2: Codecs. The codecs media player is trying to use in order to play whatever files you're trying to open, would either not be capable of playing these file types (Example: .mp3, .avi, .asf, .wmv, .mkv, etc), so you could try grabbing a newer codec pack (I use storm codec pack, comes packed with pretty much every commonly used codec for a various range of file types, also gives you a nicer new version of "Media Player Classic" which also plays any video type you want, even can play off iso rips and stuff directly ;) very cool...). So this could be one avenue to explore (if it doesn't fix it, it would be a nice little addition to make your media life on your comp alot easier =P).

3: Corrupted codecs/Installed drivers. Try a un-installing and re-installing your sound card through device manager, as well as re-installing any codecs/video players you're using and getting these errors with.

4: Conflicts! - Your sound card and newer versions of media player just dont get along =/ This will cause alot of instability when playing files through the players, or even cause them not to run, freeze up your comp, or just lag like crap. FInding a new player at this point would be recommended =P

Soooo bottom line, mess with some of these things and see what works for you.. though as far as an audio player goes, if wmp10+ wont work for ya.. try winamp or something like that... and for videos, try wmp classic or vlc player.. both good video players =)

Hope this has helped to resolve ya prob, if it still doesn't ,feel free to pm me for some more help (or ask me to come back to this thread incase others need help with this too)...

Good luck =P

- Mat

-P.S - If this stuff doesn't make sense.. i'll try make it easier for ya if you need... and excuse any stuff which may not make sense or be gramatically correct.. Jim+Coke all night has that sort of effect on me..=)
