A friend of mine just confirmed his 42" X Series has optical out.

the w series has optical out so your's should too. It may be optical in though, can't remember right now.

the amp has 2 optical in's so you could run a second one from the tv to the amp.

I don't bother running my tv through the amp, though i could probably hdmi direct to the TV and then optical out from the tv to the amp. It might work. It might be another 2 hour head fuck like the last time i was trying to get it outputing more than stereo....

after all that heavy discussion, i am having second thoughts about buying HD TV, is it really that much headache and complicated?

yeah personally sony disgusts me with their support. products are great, when they work!

i have a panasonic HD 32" LCD panel, hasnt missed a beat. the sony twin tuner HD HDD recorder fucks up all the time, and they say there is nothign wrong with it, now its out of warranty and im rooted, i just reboot it once a week and its sorta is stable

anyway, sony panels are good i hear, i didnt want to risk buying one, or paying the price

The TV isn't the problem. It works brilliantly. plug in an aerial and power and you are set.

It's the sony amp thats the problem. If you want to run 5.1 you have to have optical. Thats all it comes down to. No 5.1 component inputs. It does have digital coax for 5.1 but non of my other gear supports that anyway.

And the playstation supposedly auto detects what the receiver can handle, but it can't so you have to figure it out for yourself becasue the documentation is woeful.

actually I have to confess, my amp is a Sony...

... but its old school - no HDMI, only one optical in and one coax in. It does have 5.1 channel component sound input, but I've never used it.

connecting Xbox to it via optical is dead easy... no configuration required at all - the amp automatically detects 5.1 and switches over. Xbox however is not automatic - you do have to manually select digital dolby 5.1 in the menu options - however if you make that setting but only use the stereo leads, it does automatically drop back to 2 channel.

Your sony amp has HDMI inputs, but it wont handle 5.1 via HDMI? That's weird, the whole idea of HDMI is so you can make use of the extra bandwidth for 7.1 audio... (maybe they added partial HDMI functionality as a sales gimmic?)

Thats how i run my PS3 as my amp is to old for HDMI (5.1 yamaha) and i get 5.1.

Yeah and im getting true 5.1 with my PS3 that way (My amp will turn 2.0 into fake 5.1) Golden eye on N64 sounds epic with the fake 5.1

I got a sony x series bravia 46 inch and i love it!!! esp the bonus ps3.. otherwise i would have never forked out 700 bucks for a ps3..
