Hi All,

Anybody considered an upgrade to hid's ?
(Not the white light bulbs but REAL hid lighting)

I've been looking at this kit from the US.

http://www.2kracing.com/product_info.php/cPath/36/products_id/1716?osCsid=c173874205cacb64006a992241c78f5e

AND this one even has a good comparison of the difference in light colours:

http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/hidxenon.html

Prices seem to be around $350-$450 US Dollars.

Looks like a good setup to me, Anybody done this upgrade?

If so any advice or feedback?

Thanks,
Payam

P.S I believe they are illigal for road use in Australia and America. Not sure why bmw, honda and audi have them on their cars.

I belive the JDM S15 ones are illegal becasue of the time it takes to switch between high beam and low beam, thats just what I heard from some guy from SSS automotive. But as for the kits I dont know, and do you rekon a highway patrol copper would know the difference between stock and HID???

Hmm..i figure that the cops would assume it's an Audi or Honda S2000 tearing down the FWY with factory hids.

The HID Kits come as seperate lowbeam and highbeam kits, you have to buy them seperate. Think the highbeam kit costs more, not 100% on that.

for S15s, the lenses are different for HIDs. they have a different focus. Some kits are good. but remember only get Phillips burners are they are pretty much the best on the market. dont settle for anything else.

as for why they are removed on S15s (if equipped) im sure its a stupid reason, the Low beams DO NOT go out when the highbeams are turned on, much like S13s and S14as (with projector style lenses) so there is no time switch, Xenon takes a little longer to 'warm up' but that doesnt affect hi and low beams. who knows why they do it, maybe they are illegal in '99 registered cars in Aus? but yeah so many euro and jap cars come with them! maybe its because the S15 ones are adjustable - height ways - and the rest that are 'Australian Compliant' are fixed?

you gotta be careful when installing these coz i've heard that if the transformer doesn't getting enough cooling, it heats up and heats things around it. If you do get it done, opst up some pics, as this would be a great mod... i wouldn't mind doing it, but its a lil too expensive just for lights.

i can get cheaper kits that use Phillips burners. i just cant justify the $600 price tag for head lights.........yet :P

BUT, the price will come down the the quality of the starter/ballast unit (not transformer - they do something else) and if they are combined into one box etc.

OEM S15 XID Xenon lights are illegal because they are not auto-leveling or auto-cleaning.

The S15 uses HID Xenon on low beam, normal halogen on high beam. Level is adjusted manually in cabin via a control stalk.

An example of cars that come with HID Xenon in Australia from factory:
Honda Accord Euro (Luxury), Honda S2000, Mazda RX8 (leather pack), Nissan 350Z (Track edition), Lexus SC430, RX330, IS300 - and whole bunch of Euro cars.

Yeah about 100 times better/brighter/clearer, dont tell me you have never been next to a S2000, Accord Euro, BMW, Merc.... and jaw dropped on how bright the road is in front of them.
