Thought I would contribute to this thread as it was the first one I came across when looking for tyre info.

The rims I put on Kate's car came with 215/40 R17 Falken ZE-326's on them and they have proved to withstand her driving 'style' very well so I figured I would stick with them, although move to a 45 profile (to match the diameter of the standard tyre/rim combination - Thank you M. Laws). As they say, better the devil you know.

The first place I rang was the Sydney Falken distributor because I didn't think anyone local would stock them. They told me one of the local guys here deals quite a few of their tyres and I grabbed a name of who he thought was one of the bigger dealers when it comes to falkens (in Sydney).

Anyway, the brunt of it is that the local place is getting the Z-326 215/45 R17's in for me at $167 each. I rang Aussie Best tyres to compare and they said they had them for $145 each (and that they had about 50 in stock).

I am happy to keep our money local and save the trip to sydney mainly because I am only replacing two tyres. If it was four I think I would have to either haggle with the local bloke or make the trip to sydney.

Best place I have found so far is

Matthews tyre service, Pacific Hwy, Chatswood

ph: 9412 3306

18/235/18 Falken Tyres for $205 (without haggling them down).

I will try Australia's best next time around for a quote, sounds good.

Also one thing to note is that it is quite easy to get a bit knocked off the price by haggling with them for a better price, as I always do. :)

Depending on your driving style, the Falken Ziex will do the job if you cruise around. But, as many ppl have said before, cheap tyres are cheap for a reason. Save a little more, do yourself a favour and invest on a set of quality tyres.

Ziex are crap Full Stop!!!!

Can't wait till they wear out so i can get a new set.....but i think that'll take a while because they are very hard wearing tyres, hence "CRAP"....Good if you want a set to last you ages.

To give you a good example of how crap they are, I have 265's on the back, and they grip worst then my stock tyres. :-?

Everyone I've ever talked to whose driven on Ziex's (which, thankfully, has not been me) have all mentioned how little grip they get. They're not too bad for water dispersal, so all that means is that your driving style doesn't have to change too much from wet to dry (ie you have to pussy foot it around if you've got a decent amount of grunt). :)

And, since they're such a hard compound, they last for fucking ages so most of them feel bad about throwing them out early which means they've been saddled with them for far longer than they've wanted to.

I'd say that Ziex's make good training drift tyres, since they're absolutely useless for actually putting the car where you point it. And you can smoke them up to your heart's content, feeling good that:

a) they're shit tyres anyway, so who cares
b) you could probably run full smoking drifts every corner in them and they'll last about as long as a set of decent tyres driven normally

On topic, fuck cheap tyres. If there's two things you should never scrimp on, its your tyres and your brakes. Especially if you drive a sports car (or like to pretend to). Taxis use cheap tyres, and we all see how well those things turn and stop with their LPG lowered power output and wallowy suspension.

Well from what has been said I see two good points about ziex for kate's car. Those being the little change between wet/dry and that they will last well.

Having said that though, had I actually bothered to ask for some opinions/experiences i would have grabbed something a bit safer in the twisties.

*searches forums for what might be a better option for the next two*

Hey guys,

Just got 4 new tyres fitted as my drifitng was going crazy :o :o I couldnt even keep the car straight in the wet on the freeway :-?

Just bought Savs Intensa 235/45 R17 for $160 a tyre.

I know there not the best you can get by an means, however we all have budgets at times.

Will let you know how they go!!

P.S Had Faulkens on before and they were very average.

For the most part, I've found Falken's street tyres to be pretty average. Their Ziex's etc may have a nice looking tread pattern, but everyone who's ever driven on them find they provide little grip.

Their Azenis line are awesome, but as they are semi-slicks their wet weather performance isn't that great (compared to a regular street tyre), and tyre life is far shorter.
