Ok heres the thing: My Grandpa is 84 and thinks he can still drive ok, keyword there being think.

He has trouble seeing his speedo during the day unless he has his headlights on so as to light up the instrument panel. Until reading the year long thread started by snezy when looking for a HUD tacco, I had no idea there were aftermarket versions of the one in the missus' sil (speedo of course, not tacco). Everyone in Snezy's thread seemed to want one but no-one actually mentioned where they are available or accurate pricing. So my question is does anyone know where you can buy one of these and can they be fitted to any car with a chip in it? My Gramps drives a VR Commodore.

Come on guys, help the old buggar make it to 85 :o

put an apexi rsm on the dash, has a digital speed readout..

So you just want a speedo or tacho ?

There are kits out that give you heads up display on pretty much any car for around $300.

If you just want a digital speedo which is easy to read then you can get a Pivot Speed Meter, pick them up for around $100.

The Apexi RSM is an overkill and will probably end up confusing him, I just installed one in my car and its got more options and features than you can poke a stick at :P

Maybe this would be the way to go

Cheers for the help man, I know you're busy

If you want a HUD style speedo I am not 100% where to get one from, I would suggest you ring Auto One, AutObarn, Repco etc and ask them if they sell them or know where to get one.

A HUD is quite useful but you might have visibility problems, not quite sure, I have them with my HUD but only because I dont have the special reflective panel on my windscreen.

The pivot might be your best choice as you can mount it where you want pretty much :)

You need the special bit in the windscreen or you will see double.
So a aftermarket HUD would be usless without the windscreen to go with it.

some people say you can get a special "film" to put over the area where the HUD displays and it does the same thing..

just an idea.
if you could ever find one that is ( HUD )

Skitzo: I think the point Mayhem is making is that you could get a pivot speed meter, mount it on the top of the dash and have big, red LED numbers right in your face. It would probably work better than a aftermarket HUD also, as i suspect it wouldn't be that visible in broad daylight on a normal windscreen.

Yep I think that is what he is saying too Mr H, and I think you are both right. I was under the impression a HUD would work ok without the windscreen. I did email autobarn already about both the P.S.M. and a HUD but they haven't gotten back to me yet. But anyway I will source the Pivot either off here of from somewhere I dunno.

I reckon the PSM would be a shitload easier to install too, so thats another plus. There might be one problem with it though - does it record 0-400 in minutes ???

Thanks for the help everyone - cheers

Yeah it doubles at certain times through the day (at noon I can't even seen it, but most other times during the day its fine and I am happier NOT to have the panel in the glass)

... but the HUD kits come with a reflective tint that 99% stops that....

hmmmm well if thats the case I might talk to my uncle about it when we get the old fella's next load of wood and see what he reckons. The pivot is probably better though as long as there is a suitable place to mount it where he can still see the rest of his gauges.

Cheers again Mr Mayhem
