Hey, I had a quick search but couldn't find exactly what I was after...

It's well overdue for me to get a car alarm, but I really don't know what I'm after, nor what I should pay.

I've got a 93 180sx (if the type of car really matters?), so what should I buy?
What things should I be looking for? (I don't need remote start - and it has to be turbo timer friendly)
Any links to retailers, ebay will be appreciated.

As for install, a mate works at a JB, so will get it professionally installed. Changing the head unit and speakers was hard enough work, heh.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

look into brands like mongoose, black widow, cyclops etc, or rhino...

check out CarAudioAustralia.com for some good threads on car alarms and also i bought my last one off a guy on there, was really good, i fitted it myself and he was more than happy for me to ring up and ask questions regarding the install etc...

Yeah, Brant's looking like a possibility, but it is a lot more [starting] money, so... yeah, not sure if I can justify the spend.

Had a look at JB today... There was a system there for $399 (which would cost me around $300 plus install)... it had a remote that would alert you when the alarm was set off (and by which sensor), but lacked battery backup. I assume it was turbo timer friendly, too, but the gf was bored with the whole experience so I didn't really look for long. They didn't seem particularly high quality, either.

Apparently most alarms will have options for add-ons like battery backup, more sensors (microwave or what-have-you) and to auto-wind your windows...
Seems I'll have to figure out exactly what things I want and option myself up from whichever base model comes closest.

what about quicktrac? If your cars get stolen, they can track your car staright away. Going to consider getting them.

I think Quiktrak are above and beyond what I'm looking for.

So far, I've checked out JB and Altapac in Newcastle... neither of which really have exactly what I wanted.
I've heard good things about the Mongoose (which Altapac have) but it doesn't have notification to your keys (or whatever you call it) - sure I can get GSM (mobile) notification, but at an extra $499 retail, that seems over the top (though I have seen one on eBay for $299).

Things I want are:
Senders to lift my windows when I lock the car
Turbo timer friendly (possibly inbuilt, but I already have one, so I don't think that's necessary)
Remote notification (for when it's set off - which I know will be useless most of the time, but I mainly want that for when I'm at work)

Of course, the usuals like 3 point immobiliser, etc

Is there anywhere in Sydney that's recommended? I want to really check out my options before I commit to anything and I don't think Newcastle is giving me anywhere near all my options.

The only one that I can think of that might come close to what you are after is a STEEL MATE. Check out their website http://www.steel-mate.com/ JayCar sell them, you will probably have to order in the 2way units as I don't think they carry them as stock items.

They even do a 2-way remote, with remote engine start 888A.

Thiswas also one of the most popular alarms of the last few years, again, seems to have what you want, plus a little bit more.

Doesn't matter what alarm you get, if the install is shit the alarm is almost useless.

I had a decent Mongoose alarm on my car (was installed before I bought it).

The installation was absolutely SHOCKING. I got a new alarm the other day because I knew it was bad, I wasn't sure how bad though - until we ripped it out.

The installation of an alarm plus removal of an old one should take about 4-6 hours or so by a professional, give or take a an hour or two. Places that offer installations in an hour are jokers, and will do nothing but fuck it up.

Put it this way, a hundred dollars or so extra could be the difference between you arriving to find thieves still fiddling in your car or you arriving to see your car gone...

AutoWatch, a South African brand, make some very good alarms. MetroSound in Artarmon is a great installer (ask for Haig, and tell him Peter with the Silvia sent you), and will do very quality work. Not exactly cheap, but you get what you pay for.

I just want to know is the Steelmate alarms australian approved?

My mate with a s15 in insured with just cars, needs one that is oz approved.

And one of my mates specialises in these alarms but doesnt shit all about them just does a good job installing them.

There the ones that are 2way paging, and all the other mumbo jumbo features.

They're sold by Jaycar (if nowhere else) so I'm sure they are...

advise

don't get brant alarms, they are crap.. I have the Nemesis one keypad & alarm..

6 point immobiliser my ass, they hook up 3 immobiliser for the alarm and the other 3 is just connected in series with the previous points.

so technically it is still 3 points if you trace back the wires.

Also their qualified technicians are crap, the wiring is a mess.

Well I bought the car with the alarm installed in it already, first thing I did during that week was rip it out, and re-wire the entire system the way I wanted it.

Alarm module is not under steering column, and all wiring has been taped up with the factory loom, all the wires cut to length and soldered on & heat shrinks used.

Immobiliser points to:
- ECU Power
- Fuel Pump
- Starter
- Car's Power
- Igniter pack

good odd 5 points, not like how brant would wire it... morons.

And never get an alarm installer to install your alarm. They do it for 1000 cars the same one. If you can steal one car, you can steal 1000.

DO IT YOURSELF, BE DIFFERENT, PUT THE MODULE SOMEWHERE ELSE...
