yeah, they're great. if you like sucking hot, unfiltered air into your engine.

I would advise you to stop looking at places like the autosalon and at magazines devoted to it if you want to build a car that works properly.
most of the cars featured do not even run, likely never will, and are modified for purely aesthetic reasons, and questionable ones at that.

Here's a few hints for you:

If you saw it at Autosalon, then chances are its for show, its probably detrimental to performance, and its definitely not road legal.

They should rename "bell mouth" to "bell end", since it adequately describes the owner of aforementioned accessory.

ROFL. Thats gold.

Yes, a bell mouth can give a gain in performance, but as the boys have stated, the cars you are looking at have it for little more than rice value.

Higher end air boxes generally have internal bellmouths as do high end replacement plenums (have a look inside the top end drag rotor plenums if you have a chance) but the big funnel jammed on the front of the turbo is a waste of time.

Yeah Justin - surely you know about the measurement conventions for deciding if a mod is good or not.. You have to be able to fit your whole head into the intake of the compressor housing, or it's not big enough. And your cannon (becuase nothing else performs...), must be able to accomodate your entire shoe

Cypher: yeah, that's more or less correct, but I recall seeing an update circular about mufflers a couple of weeks ago that stated you now had to be able to fit your entire head into the tip(s),and the piping has to be large and straight enough at the rear for you to put your entire arm in up to the shoulder. if your vehicle doesn't comply with this standard,it is not considered to be 'hektik' enough to enter the autosalon competition and it is suggested that you either make adjustments to your car's setup so that it complies with this rule,or content yourself with a feature in a local magazine.

As well as what the others have stated, the only other place you see bell mouths is on drag cars where they run no filter at all except for a piece of mesh covering the hole where the headlight uses to be.

It's definately a better drag aplication.

Does the bell mouth do anything that not having it, and just having an open turbo inlet with nothing attached to it, doesn't do?

Like, does it somehow reduce turbulence going into the compressor to improve flow?

If not, a bell mouth does shit all since its obviously not filtering air of particulates before it enters your extremely sensitive-to-impurities intake system and engine.

Properly shaped bell mouths or ram tubes do improve airflow into an intake system.

On an N/A car, engine response and the power band can be affected quite heavily by the length of these tubes.

Because dirt and crap is heavier than air, reasonably effective filtering happens just by changing the direction of the air flow. Dirt will keep going in the original direction.

Competition motors that are only intended for tarmac driving (or dyno queens) don't need the same filtering as regular cars so you can leave the filter off. On a drag strip or dyno you don't have cars in front of you kicking dirt up into your engine bay.

I Agree that in a turbo set-up, a bellmouth straight into a turbo under a bonnet is going to suck to much hot air unless cool outside air is funnelled to it. But when the car is on display, you just go for what looks impressive.

I thought about bell mouthing my turbo but BHdave talked me out of it thanks for that :P

If you must GCG sell them for 84 bucks in three colours I think.
