Post subject:  Car Batteries

Hi everyone,

just want to ask question.

Odysee Batteries - are they any good? speaking to a sales rep of a performace shop, he said that they are not worth the money, and that if they go flat you are screwed becasue it wouldnt charge properly again.
if this is the case i cant justify $300 bucks for a 800amp battery?

Century batteries he said are the way to go, and are a fraction of the cost - $80 bucks. and if they go flay you can charge them up again.

whats the go there? issit becasue odysee baterries are a special kind of cell (dry????)

let me know cheers,

mark

i spoke to a guy at battery world, and he said the odysseys were no good, and he was actually selling them

said there have been some reliability issues, and that they werent honouring warranties, so they had stopped selling them at the time

he recommended optima batteries, if you needed something with more juice then a standard battery

Odyssey batteries are good batteries when used properly. The problem is that too many people end up using one that is too small for the task.

People install a FMIC and then use a small 650 Odyssey because they don't think they can fit something larger in more or less the original position.

I put a 650 in my car for this reason but knew it was unlikely to last 12 months. I planned to, and have now, put a larger battery in the boot of the car before the odyssey failed completely.

I have an odyssey in my car.

it's teh tiny little 650 one, cost me $150, so I wouldn't call it expensive, i think retail is now around $175 so still reasonable for what you get IMHO.

Mine has been in my cars (swapped it into new car when i swapped cars, cause I love the odyssey) and only once has it failed to start teh car.

That was after the car sat for 3 weeks with the alarm set to on mode.

Apparently the slow draw over cold winter weeks drained it.

I've since trickle charged it (over 4 days) and no problems since.

I had one of the small oddessy's the problem with it seemed to be that it didn't have enough CCA for my car and it eventually just died and wouldn't start or accept charge at all. I put a larger one in (around 380CCA I think) and I haven't had a problem with it since.

As with anything electrical there can be problems with it just not working properly, they may have had one bad batch and now their rep is gonna be tarnished with those who got that batch.

A BIT OFF TOPIC

Can you store batteries as-is in the box?
They won't expire after X amount of time?
They only expire if you have them hooked up to the car correct?

lead acid (car type) batteries should be kept fully charged at all times.

Generally they have a shelf life of at least six months without any problems, but it's good to pull them out and give them a trickle charge every now and then to make sure it's full.

Running a car battery flat, especially if it's left flat for a while, is the quickest way to permanently kill it.

I use the Exide Premium batteries from K-Mart, which are about $60 for one that fits in the battery tray turned 90° and clears cooler piping.
They seem to last well and I've never had a problem with one going flat.

i've had the odyssey 800 for a while and have had no problems

if you let any battery go flat and then charge it, you will shorten its life expectancy.

BTW my 800 battery had to be mounted on its side and it fits snug with the room left by the ic piping. just have to watch out for it arcing on the front sub frame and also need to make u'r own custom battery bracket.

i have heard that in the past some ppl have had warranty problems.

i got mine from battery world and they recommended it and were heaps cheaper than autobarn & CarAudioExcellence
