Hey people.. i jsut bought one of these today... http://www.blitz.com.au/Images/100814.jpg wondering if they are any good? are there any cons to this type of airfilter as for the $$ i paid for it i hope not :/ |

They're good for keeping out rocks and smallish animals. Some people also think they look good. Stay about 10kilometres away from dirt roads and you might be okay. |

these things are bad news. Next time you're near it have a look at the mesh. There's one layer, and the holes in the mesh are plenty large enough to let dust particles through. Big bits of sand will be stopped, but every day the car in front of you is kicking up a steady stream of fine dust that'll go straight through these filters, and most of the foam ones. I had a good look at some filters at Autobarn the other day, and the only one I'd buy is the Simota / 3A Racing one. They use a multi layer fabric filter element with no visible perforation. Even the K&N filters have holes in the fabric weave large enough for dirt particles to get in along each of the pleats. I pulled apart my old cheapo ($25) filter after using it for well over a year, and driving through mud puddles, doing track days, heaps of wet weather use, and quite a bit of dirt road driving and the inner layers of the filter element were still nice and clean (there were solid chunks of mud on the outside!) This filter was basically the same design as the Simota, but cheaper. My only complaint about it is that the mesh that holds the element in shape seems to have a dodgy coating on it which flakes off after some time. Hopefully the Simota filter won't have the same problem. If it does though I'm pretty sure the K&N would as well, since the mesh looks exactly the same. |

lol simota pods are not to be used on turbo cars, theres a cap in the middle which would be sucked into the intake as happened with some ppl before, they see ohh $20 air filter must be good, hahaha...

I haven't tried one, or had a look at the condition of a turbo compressor wheel on a car running an Apexi filter for any length of time, but from what I've seen they're good. There's nothing to fault the design anyway - they use a paper element (pretty much like the factory filters), which flows well, and filters very well. The filter casing has some proper aerodynamic design in it to give better / smoother airflow - and the results seem to show that it works. They're not washable though, so you'd want to find a source of them for a good price 
I haven't had any problem with the Simota filters. There are other cheap ones that use dodgy glue in their construction though. I've had a few that are very tough, and one that fell apart. BTW - the Simotas are around the $45 mark, whereas the ~$20 ones can be a bit variable. I did have a $25 one for ages though, and when I retired it I pulled it apart to look at the filter element. It was amazingly hard to separate the glue! |

The APEXi pods are as washable and reusable as the factory filters. People do it but it is not advisable. They can be damaged during the cleaning process, even by compressed air cleaning. |
