 Post subject: What to do with my car

I'm currently in two minds about what to do with my engine, due to the beating it has taken from the previous owners I was first planning on leaving the car in the backyard for awhile then getting the engine rebuilt with forged internals etc so I know it'll be fine on the track.

But now I'm considering leaving it how it is for the moment, getting step 1 HKS cams to go with the turbo and seeing how it goes on the track & if it dies then I'll get it rebuilt it then..

Anyone got an opinion on what they think would be the better option?

motors are always better when they haven't been blown
because when the motor blows it's copped a lot of heat and stress and it will never be the same.

the better thing to do would be to rebuild it as it is.

Thanks for that, I was thinking of going that way but thought I'd ask first cause there's alot of guys on here that know more bout engines than me

another option (but obviously more expensive option)

is to get another working motor and rebuild that on the side
and that way you also get a car to thrash to your hearts content

Yeah I was also kicking around that idea a few years ago, but then just discarded it, I think mainly because I haven't got a garage and no real place to store a second engine :(

Are you doing the engine build yourself? If you are getting someone else to build the engine then they have to find a place to store the engine while they are working in it. If you are building the engine then you are going to need a certain amount of room to put it together as you can't do it in situ.
When your 'new' motor is finished put it in your car and sell your old motor if you haven't blown it up by that time. Or find some space and rebuild it as a spare.

I'd like to rebuild it myself but unfortunately I haven't pulled down an engine before, I could pull my dodgy motor out and practise on that but I doubt it'll turn out well.. so at the moment I'm probably leaning more towards having it rebuilt professionally.

Also this might be a noob question, but what is situ?

Ah ok thanks for that, so would you suggest it's better to have it rebuilt by someone else? or have a crack on my old engine and see how it goes?

Are you assuming the engine is in bad nick or do you know?

Why don't you get a health check done on the engine now to find out what condition it is in?

Leak down test and/or compression test, throw it on the dyno to check tune and AFR's, degrease it to check for oil leaks, check the wiring etc.

If everything is OK, throw in some good oil, new plugs, coolant etc run low boost and take it to the track and enjoy it.

As SR's are generally strong and can take abuse, you could save yourself a lot of money and time.

Don't throw money away building an engine if it's never going to see revs over 7500 or power over 250rwkw if it is still healthy.

At higher power it'll wear out quicker but it won't just blow up and there's no real cost difference between rebuilding a tired engine or a good one.

I really prefer stock engines for reliability as there are way too many built ones that have premature deaths for my liking.

At the moment I'm just assuming, Though Yavuz told me if I'd thrashed it once I would of killed it due to really bad leaning out and was running boost with no limit (at one stage it got to 23psi before he stopped the run) so I figured with the excess boost and lack of fuel it wouldnt do my engine too well but once I get the turbo in I'll take it down to get a health check on it to see how it's going.

Also I'm not that much of an idiot to ignore the advice given by yourself & badhairdave seeing as you guys know more than I do, so I'll abandon my plans of strengthening it and if need be I'll fix it up with stock parts

If it ain't broke....

If it's not exhibiting signs of wear, passes health checks (compression, leakdown etc) there is no reason to just assume that it's going to blow up.

Seems like a pointless exercise rebuilding it just cos, and like was mentioned above unless your goal is uber power then you should probably spend the money on driving the car or things that will allow you to keep the engine healthy when you drive like cooling and gauges.
