I must be getting old or just gay - but having a rim sit inches outside of the guard purely for looks seems silly.

I can understand if you are looking for increased wheel track and developing the car to place a wider tyre on it then looking at gards etc in the future but most of the vehicles I see run a stretched tyre delivering no benefit to performance.

Is this another pants hanging from the bum thing?

I agree. I have no problem with low or even negative offset wheels, provided that they have an appropriately sized tyre on them, and (at least the top of the wheel and tyre) fits inside the bodywork.

a 205 stretched onto a 9" wide rim won't hold the road any better than the std wheel does,it's pure wank.

215's work on a 9.5" on the track for me :D

Rims can stick out its and its fine, just got to make sure tread of the tyre is under the gard...

but Jay you loose the effectiveness of the tyre when it is stretched to much.

That is true. but with out strech you get tyre rollover when drifting..

I knew you'd start this thread LOL!!

Wide, low offset, low car equals good stance...

Generally this has adverse effects on handling but equals thousands of JDM rice points :P

It's each to there when it comes to styling.. here are some examples to help explain:

Small stretch wheels inside guards

Full size tyre on correct size wheel:

VIP, Stretch, camber outside guards :)

Drifter spec, flares stretch as per Juzzo's explanation for grip vs slip..

Stretch and low offset is definatly an old man problem, as you came from a time when it was cool to over-tyre a rim.

.. in some instances running full size tyres is detrimental to handling...

for instance... my car is a drift car... drift works better with castor....

I recently put normal sized semi slicks on the car to do some wakefield bashing. due to the ridiculously large side wall. I had to pull castor out of my setup to allow the wheels to turn unimpeded.

car was stupidly hard to correct in drift sessions, due to the massive loss of castor.... and hence,. big baloon tyres = bad handling...

swapped back to 215s on 9... maxed castor out... and back to 3rd gear slides... 8)

that has more to do with your car being too low and not having adequate tyre-to-bodywork clearance because of your alignment setup than with stretched tyres being 'superior for handling' compared to a more normal fitment for a given width.

my S14 runs 235/45/R17's on 17x9's with +20 offset,8deg. of castor, tein tie rods about half inch of clearance above the tyre to the guards.
the only thing it rubs on full lock is the plastic splash liner behind the S15 SMIC,and it only rubs that because the liner is distorted from fitting over the thicker core. If I had an FMIC,there'd be no rubbing at all and could probably even go up to a 245 without anything touching.

Justin...

p.s. Serial,we ALL hate sex-spec cars.

lol.... i honestly dont think I can make it any higher...

the fact of the matter is.. this new fandangled sport called drifting, that all the kids do... requires different specs, in which some situations, a stretched tyre producing a lower profile, can provide adequate benefits..
whether its clearance or stability issues due to reduced sidewall flex.

if you cant accept that point of view thats fine. I have no issue with that, but there is some truth in the matter.

Ok,so the ride height is normal, and you have big front guards, and it still scrubs? where?

I'm not disputing that there's some increase in stability with a mildly stretched tyre. but a 215 on a 9.5" rim is more than some stretch.

As we both more or less said before, diameter difference of the narrower tyre is giving you more clearance, not the stretch.
if you put an 8" rim on with the 215 in a similar offset it'd work just as well.

and I'm also not so old that I don't know what drifting is. I was sliding monaros and toranas around before you even had a license.

You do realise that when you change the castor, the toe also changes? That probably had a bigger effect on handling than the castor change alone

yeah I know. I adjusted my toe accordingly... I have camber gauges and toe plates.
