Hey guys,
I found something dodgy on carsales.com.au and thought it was worth sharing.

If you search for the numberplate "BHG14M", two cars come up. At first I thought the search algorithm was set up to return all similar plates (like BHG14M and BHG14N). This is not the case.
Both cars are identical. 1999 Pearl White, Manual, JDM S15s with white Enkei rims. But the ads use different photos, so I figured it was probably just two very similar cars.

Then it gets weird. Both cars have THE SAME NUMBERPLATE. BHG14M.

So that made me think that maybe it was the same guy, listing his car twice for a better chance of selling it (one ad as a 200SX and the other as a Silvia). The problem is that one version of the ad lists the odometer reading as 50,XXXkm and the other as 40,XXXkm. The rego expiry is also 4 or 5 months different in the two ads, and the asking price varies by $3000. The sellers also have totally different names and live 45 minutes apart.

Here are the two ads if you want to have a look for yourself:
First dodgy link
Second dodgy link

The only explanation I can come up with is that one (or more) scammers have used photos from a forum and put up at least one fake ad (or maybe both). I would imagine that if anyone turned up to look at the fake car, they would probably be robbed of their deposit, and maybe even have their car stolen.

So remember guys - stay safe. ALWAYS get the VIN & engine numbers from the seller and do a revs check to make sure they all match with the numberplate of the car in the pictures BEFORE you go to inspect it.

If it's a fake ad, the "seller" wont be able to provide you with the VIN number and engine number.

Have you reported this to carsales?

I know that they can investigate it or pass this onto the Police.

Damn these low life scum scamming people!

then they say something like they wanted to take it overseas bu it cant pass emisions,

then ask you to transfer a 50% deposit and they transfer the ca to you for you to inspect it and if your happy tou pay the other 50%

UPDATE: It seems that one of the ads is legitimate (the first one). The guy who put up that ad sent me a VIN & engine number, but I couldn't verify them because REVS is down.

When I asked the other advertiser for the same details, he told me that he'd already found a buyer...

Perhaps one guy sold it to the other guy but the other guy realised straight away that he couldn't actually afford it so advertised it straight away

I've called carsales and they're looking into it. Hopefully they pass it on to the police if it is a scam.

Yeah, that was another idea I had, but why would the rego expiry change from December 2009 to February 2010? How would you even do that? The second ad also doesn't mention the heavy duty clutch that the car has.

Then there's the huge odometer difference. If it's legitimate, the car would have to have done 9000km in two weeks. In order to achieve that, he'd have to drive for 6.5 hours a day at 100km/h every day for the two weeks he owned it.

I'm pretty sure the second ad is real. He claims to be located in that area.
