hello all!
Im just curious to know what wax / polish you use when you buff your car with some good ol' elbow grease!
I used the Maguires cabana wax last time, it turned out ok, but really didnt last long..
please no "but your a girl and are weaaakkk!" comments :p i had help from daddy-dear. lol, i also didn't use a polish before waxing as i didn't have any at the time, nor do i know what to go out and buy?

what do you all reccommend for a good proper shine-up? any special techniques or products? sure i could just "take it and get it professionally done" but i enjoy the satisfaction of doing something like this myself to admire. :)

cheers

Firstly, let's clear up a common misnomer:

Polish is an abrasive cleaner, wax is a protective finish coat.

Polish should be use when you have small scratches, slight paint fade, etc. There are varying grades of polish out there. You need to have realistic expectations too; a lot of polishes will shine your car nicely, but you will have swirl marks (only visible up close).

Once you do polish the car, use a wax to protect the shine.

I'm a fan of Autoglym products, I reckon they do a great job.

All in all, if you are buying multiple products, it may be slightly more economical to take it to somewhere like SCW Detailing (they use only Meguiars products) who do a great job for not much money. They are the only place I entrust with washing my car if I'm too lazy.

Never buy those combined wax/polish things from Woolies, they are cheap and nasty.

i didnt know you could by combined stuff from woolies lol!

Cheers for that, I plan on doing it this w/e as i have nothing on and she's in dire need of a good polish and wax :)

I assume you can by autoglym products from any autostore? supercheap, autobarn etc?

i have loooots of scratches and scruffs that have shown up alot more recently, and in general she looks like she could do with a good shine up compared to when i last gave her just a wax!

you can get the meguries/ autoglym stuff from autobarn

it depends ehat your after, do you want something that kinda protects it for a long time, or just makes it shiny for a while

i usually wash my car, use the autoglym fast glass to get rid tar spots bugs ect (but i saw another autoglym product last time i was at work so i might try that next time). then i use meguires weet look, shines it up nicly but only lasts a few weeks, dont usually worry about waxing it couldnt be bothered :P

another guy at work uses the autoglm resin polish (i think its called something like that got a red label) to do his silvia's but he only does it once a year or so and he said thats ment to protect it for a long time

meh

in regards to the polish/wax combo have you used the meguires colour X pretty sure that is a combo but it works great gives the car a great deep finish and is suppose to protect the car as a wax would.

i got a heaps of swirl marks even though my car has been resprayed recently. i cant seem to get rid of them, the colour x did a pretty good job of hidding most of them but i have come to the conclusion you cant own a black or dark coulored car without getting some sort of swirlmarks.

If some one has any tips on how to avoid them that would be greatful.

agreed with swirly marks, i have them, on my bonnet not anywhere else (visible) .

cheers Locky. I had a look on some websites and came across the autoglym resin polish... looks like the way to go :) just want it to be a bit shiney, but protect for a couple of months too. mainly due to the fact when i do wash my car, or it gets rained on..it has that annoying the water just sits there in one giant bubble, it doesn't bead off anymore. same goes when i chamois it.

do you know if the autoglym resin polish gives it a nice shine? or can i combine it with the meguires wet look?

i saw him do i it did come up quite shiny and nice

but because the car was a little warm when he did it the excess turned into almost a powder when he buffed it off . make sure the cars cool when you do it and it might not be too bad, it came up nice, its just if he didnt carefully wipe it off thers were bits of power on the car

i probebly wouldnt combined that with wet look though

Go to autoglym's website they got a section which says ask an expert there is some handy info there, it says for dark cars with swirl marks to use thier deep shine.

They also say the super resin polish can be used with thier extra gloss protection (which is basically a wax) to a enhance the shine and extend protection.

might give the autoglym stuff ago, has anyone compared the two?
