If the paint needs it. It is 3 step minimum.
1- wash
2- Polish
3- Wax

You say that the wax doesnt last longer- becasue carnuaba wax is a natural wax- (and best) it probably wont last more than 3 or 4 washes then you must re apply. Everything depends on the condition of the paint, you might need to get a proper detail where they will cut the clear back and re wax it.
Then you only need to wash and wax, thereon in.

My mate polished his new Commonwhore thinking it was a wax. Now it has more swirl marks than ever. Dumb Dumb Dumb.

Read this maintenace sched http://www.waxit.com.au/

cabana wax wouldnt last long cause I wash my car once or twice a week!
I read the maintenance guide, im just going to post it here for others :)

A question we are often asked is: How often do I need to apply these products?

We have put together the guide shown below, however please bear in mind that this should be heavily influenced by the usage of your vehicle and how it is garaged, your geographic location.

Weekly = Wash and use quick detail spray, clean wheels and tyres, wipe interior surfaces and clean glass.

Monthly = As above plus: Vacuum interior, apply leather conditioner (assuming you have leather seats etc), clean wheels with wheel cleaner and apply sealant to protect, dress tyres, dress all vinyl and plastic surfaces inside and out.

Bi-Monthly = As Above plus re-apply Carnauba Wax.

As required = Strip wax or sealant, clay paint, swirl remove, polish, and apply Carnauba wax or sealant.

We find this to be required approximately every 6 months on cars that are garaged at night and parked undercover during the day.

We also remove the wheels to clean and apply a sealant to the rear of rims and to detail the wheel wells on a 6 monthly basis. However this step should only be carried out if you are confident with tools and have the correct safety equipment.

I actually attended one of the car detailing clinics run by the guys at carcareproducts.com.au

Basically if you want to spend the time and money you would do the following.

1/. Wash you car
2/. Use a Clay bar and lube to prep your car (basically this removes a lot of the small tar bits and pieces that a normal wash just wont get rid of)
3/. Give the car another quick wash
4/. Using a Random Orbital Polisher polish the car first using harsh polish grades and pads to remove the scratches and cobwebs on the car and then apply a polish with a a high gloss value and gentle pads to bring back the shine in your car
5/. Again give the car a quick wash down
6/. Apply a wax coat let it dry and then apply another

If you are gonna go the whole hog be prepared to spend an entire day (up to 8 hours) the results are worth it!
