Having a car with no guts is driving me crazy!

I have plenty of money for a new one, but I don’t want to go and spend all my available cash on a car (I really want to spend as little as possible).
I have been tossing up two possible scenario…

Spend 30k+ on an EVO VIII and have most of the bits I need for a descent car already there or buy a 300ZX cheap with a buggered engine and whack a 2JZ in there. I can see pro and cons both ways but the indecision is driving me nuts.

I figure I will probably still spend another 10k if I buy the EVO and I could probably build a 300 with 2J for sub 20.

my mate just bought an Evo VIII MR - awesome car.. he paid a bit more for it (virtually brand new - only 6,000kms), but for the money they are great.

2J into Z32 will cost you double whatever you budget. its the nature of doing swaps like that. something will always go wrong and end up costing alot more than you think

Wow, not your average "should I get an S14 or an R33" kind of thread..

Yeah, what's it going to be used for? Any particular reason for using the 300zx as a platform for the 2J?

Save your money and buy an S14 with all the fruit for under 15k and then save the rest for a wise investment like shares/property etc....

could you even fit a 2j under the nose of a z32? I'd have thought there would be potential clearance issues at the leading edge of the bonnet?

If you are looking to minimise cost, i would suggest getting a pre modded conventionally done S car, spend a little to shape it into what you want, then just drive it.

I have seen a few 300zx with dud engines go for something like 5k. Spend another 5k putting in a stock 2J in, and then add another 10k for miscellaneous bits. I still have the Haltech E11v2 and brand new MSD / coils and EVC boost controller left over.

I figure I can have it well and truly have it up and running for 20k. I don’t plan to run massive power (probably 250-300rwkw) which is a walk in the park for stock internals, so I will only need a need a new turbo and manifold which will come out of Misc expenses. (Maybe even buy a N/A to save money)

I don’t want to go back down the SR path because I have come to realise even though they can make good power they just don’t make the torque I require for that kick in the seat of the pants feel I need to get jollies.

I spent way too much on the motor last time around and figure I can make moderate power without having to spend 5k on the head alone. I think trying to make lazy power out of a bigger engie might be smarter then trying to ring the neck out of a smaller one.

+1 for the Evo
at least its newer and "smarter" than the 300 and that make less problematic to work with and beside that it looks 10X better than the 300!

GL with the decision mate :)

Well I am the sensible one here... :P

Otherwise I hate to say it, but an R33 gtst is just as good bang for buck!

I am still keeping enough for a house deposit but the EVO makes a bigger dent in the savings.

Do they come with oars?

if you want a 2JZ buy a supra.

a 2JZ won't fit it into a Z32 by any stretch of the imagination. the bay is both too short and too low to clear the engine. you'll have all kinds of cooling problems even if you get around my first two points as well, with the head being several inches taller than your radiator.

best bang for buck is an R32 GTR. throw $20k at that and it'll move.

you won't be happy with an evo. if you think a worked SR-powered S13 isn't very exciting an evo with it's computer-driven-everything,smooth power delivery and 4wd will have you asleep at the wheel by the end of the block.

get an older evo? like an evo 7

or you can get a wrx wagon, so your missus can put her shopping in there, and when you have kids the baby seats fit perfectly =)
