"While its options price-list is eye-watering, the C-Class earned average or slightly higher scores from most judges for value. It wasn’t always easy".

Personally, I don't see how a $60k-$90k mid size can ever be considered seriously as "value for money" in the Australian market...

what are you on about Justin? OF COURSE the car won because its the best in every category. It couldnt POSSIBLY have won due to the financial pulling power that a large organisation such as mercedes has...

Trust me it is possible. Our economy is reaching the roof and our oz dollar is rocketing high, so, 60-90K is achieviable easily these days

I don't think our "economy" or the purchasing power of our dollar have much to do with it. A C Class is still $60-$90k, and you can buy a Subaru Liberty/Mazda 6/Honda Accord Euro for a LOT less. Is a C-Class a $20,000+ better drive? I highly doubt it.

p.s. I am aware that none of my examples were eligible for COTY this year.

I don't think Wheel's COTY is meant to be 'value for money', I think Motor's BFYB is the test about 'value for money'.

We should all relive 2002 BFYB champion............... 200sx :)

I cant argue.

And further to leif's point, when you are competing against 20-30k hot hatches (for lack of a better term) i don't see how a 60k merc cannot lose a lot of points compared to say a renault megane which starts at 24k.

It's more euro trash, the extra build quality, engineering and feel just can't make up for a 36k premium. Shit for an extra 36k i'd expect the thing to give me a blow job on the way to the office each morning. And lets face it, how many daily drivers are ever going to appreciate the improved chassis dynamics, higher torque of the turbo diesel and improved handling when they spend 90% of their time in traffic driving to work and the remaining 10% on a freeway on the weekend. It doesn't work out.

it works out. holden and ford didn't cough up this year,so the next maker with the biggest cheque in hand got the nod.

BFYB isn't exactly catch-free either. when the Z33 won it,nissan had double page ads in there for it for the next 6mths also.

Well if you can afford it, go for it.

But just don't complain when you take it to the mechanic who does exactly the same job as you would do on Hyundai, but charge five times as much.

I used to work at a Caltex that had a mechanic workshop attached who speacilised in Euro cars. Honest to God I literally saw him laugh his way to the bank every weekday.

Oh that's new to me, I didn't know the Z33 won it too.

But then there's the PCOTY, I was excited for the R26 F1 Megane who gave a lot of the expensive cars a run for their money!

I dunno. If its good, then its worth it (I haven't read the piece yet, I avoid Wheels as much as possible since their goals in a car are different to mine).

However, if the car's built really well and will last forever then it'd be worth it. Its probably not, since we get raped with import charges and we don't have the economies of scale to justify it.

The thing is, the cost between building a small car and a large car is almost negligible. Its certainly not double, which is why the Euros are pushing "premium hatches" where they can charge $50K+ for an Audi A3, which is the same size as a $20K Corolla. My point is that being "mid size" vs "small size" or "large size" doesn't make it any better value.

I used to dislike Euro cars, thinking they were too expensive for what you were getting. But after living with one and driving a couple, they are just "nicer" cars than their Japanese counterparts. I'm not talking about the sports cars, but for your average Joe who just wants a conveyance....a Euro car is a better place to spend your time.
