Well here's the issue:

If you're importing for a cheap daily, unless you want something like a 1988 S13, it isn't really worth the hassle.

See, you can pretty much get the local-delivered equivalent Corolla here.

I'm assuming you will also want to import a pre-1989 car, as compliance on a car built after 1989 is under SEVS, and SEVS compliance certainly isn't cheap.

All in all, it comes down to your budget. If your budget is under $7000, then forget about importing. If it's over $7000 then do it.

I would highly recommend Iron Chef Imports. I just imported a mint S13 through Kristian and he is fantastic.

Also, remember that with a car 20+ years old, you are taking a HUGE punt on condition. Any car that age is likely to have a lot of stuff that will need fixing or replacing. Hence you would want to buy a local model so you can check it out yourself and see exactly what its condition is like.

Well, if it is a 1989 model, it is ineligible for import.

Pre-1989, it may be eligible.

You don't seem to understand the costs involved. Let's say you get the car, a supposedly mint 1988 example for ~$2500 FOB.

$50 import approval.
$60 TT fee
$800 brokers fee (if you are using Iron Chef, who is the cheapest)
$2500 Freight, duty, customs, GST, and tow-truck fees
$1500 compliance
$55 blue slip
$500 rego
$250 stamp duty

= ~$8300 give or take

NOW, that is excluding the three or four months you have to wait to get your car. That is excluding the money you may have to spend fixing or replacing worn items, which can be costly of a car that is 20 years old. And, you are taking a big gamble on the condition of the car overall.

But then again, importing can be a very rewarding experience...so if you really want to do it, do it!

hmm then perhaps maybe it's better to keep my eyes open and look for one that's already been imported...like the one above..problem is the guy who's selling doesn't want any less than $9500
which is heaps considering you buy a sx or gti (4 door adm spec equivelant) for 2-4k :-? maybe i am better of just buying adm instead of going jdm unique daily..

another one i was considering was this a82 fx gt from qld
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj19 ... _o/car.jpg

http://www.twincam.info/index.php?showt ... ntry410692

but im not too sure on the rego transfers from qld to sydney as i have heard that some cars can be regoed in certain states but not others..
the guy states the ae82 fx gt is a 90 model?
but that would mean it's not eligable for rego?
