Dear all,

JUst wanted to know roughly how much people have spend on their entire tool kit. For me to be honest I only have spend money on the cleaning kit and WD 40 and the rest I either go to my friends shop or used my old mans tool kit!!!

Some of the prices of snap on and god it was expensive for items like wrench, screw drivers, jack stands and etc. I guess thats what u have to pay for good quality items.

Luckily for me, I've had quite a few hand-me-downs and christmas/birthday presents to obtain most of my tools.

Floor jack - my mate got a new one, I got his old one.
Car stands - Dad doesn't use them any more ... yoink!
Ring/open spanners set - christmas present.
Screwdriver set - birthday present.
Socket set - christmas present.

That's all the tools I've got at the moment and is enough for most jobs. Usually when I'm working on the car it's with a few mates, so they bring their tools along, too.

Snap-On is probably a bit over-the-top for home use, sure, if you want [one of?] the best, spend that much, but my tools are Stanley and seem to be good enough quality.
Just don't get really cheap tools, they snap when you try to use them for the first time - as we found out with one of my mate's sets. Luckily the massive piece of ring spanner that snapped off didn't hit anyone (esp. in the eye!)

Also just adding to that, try out the range of Repco tools sold in (funnily enough) Repco. They come with a lifetime warranty and are made by Sidchrome/Kingchrome. I've got a socket set off they and they are really great. I'm planning on saving some dollars and finishing off an entire mobile toolchest with them so I can do all the work on my car myself.

for someone who uses them on the odd weekend they are perfect, you dont need to spend top dollar unless they are used every day. if you were a mechanic id spend the money and get the good shit because you need to depend on your tools.

If you're looking to put together some tools have a look at websites like transquip as they have some pretty good prices and do some killer specials. If you don't have access to decent trade prices it should save you a stack of cash.

Most of my stuff is a mix of kincrome/sidchrome which I think is about right for the home. If you go cheaper to the "Kmart" tools they'll just fall to bits and if you go up to the snap on level I don't think you're getting value for money for just occasional use (that said, there are some snapon tools which I have bought because they were so nice to use). I've probably only spent about 1500ish so far and am about to do a reorganisation/buy tools that went walkies which will be another 500-1000 I reckon.

Best tool in the box - quality rachet spanners. They've paid for themselves 10 times over I reckon.

I'd be surprised if I have spent less than 5k on hand, air and powertools, and specialist automotive tools.

being an electrician by day, backyard mechanic by night i have experienced that it pays to buy good tools.

If your using the tools everyday (in my case pliers, screwdrivers) it pays to spend that little bit more and get really good quality stuff.

For everything else i go kincrome, never had a problem with build quality or price.

As said dont buy that super shit stuff will only cause knuckle injuries when spanners or sockets crack and break. and if using them make sure theres no one around that doesnt like swearing.

10k on tools!!! Still u would have saved up stacks for doing stuff to your car yourself and it would have paid itself over as time goes on.

I should seriously get some of my 'own' tools.

*LOL* I guess I shouldn't be mentioning the $15k plus that I've spent already. hell,$6k of that is tool boxes and roll-cabs alone!

I'm in the trade as well, and I don't believe in cutting corners when it comes to tools for my job.

before I'm satisfied that I have enough gear to work on most models of car,I'll be up to about $25k I reckon.

Justin...
