try downloading the k-lite codec pack and installing that
or download g-spot (yes that is its proper name
) codec finder, and put the avi file into that, it will tell you what codec you need, google the codec, install, and away you go
if your still having issues, try downloading latest vid card drivers off manufacturers site, failing that give us some symptoms/error messages and we will see what we can do
i never format, only reinstall win in different directory as last resort
