If he retains the current S13 ECU/loom/dizzy how is it going to be anymore difficult/expensive at all? I'd say it'd be much cheaper.

Except without going to the S14 loom/ecu etc he'll lose the VCT, which is sort of half the point of going to S14 engine I gather (the other half being that it has 0.5:1 better compression.
IMHO dump in an S13 DE, spend any extra money on making the thing turn and stop or just save it until later when you can legally mod the thing.

i agree with neb ur best option is the s13 as changing motors is a hassle.
even little things like changing the loom to s14 has lil probs u run into .
ex:s14 speedo drive is different so if you go to s14 ecu it wont recognize the s13 speedo drive so u have to get the drive for the box too.
spend money on ur motor or if its no good get a second hand one as u will probably only want it till you can have turbo and a low km second hand s13 sr20de will do a few years easy as its not getting forced air.
and if its vct u want there isnt that much gain from it you can just put cam gears in the s13 motor have a tuner set them and be very much the same gain.

An S14 DE is a good upgrade. Although i'd stay with the S13 loom, it's a lot of work to get the S14 loom and everything wired up.

A 14 DE with a pod and decent exhaust should make 100rwkw.

if he uses the s13 loom with s13 ecu on an s14 motor it will think its in fault as it cant operate vct.
certain things still wont work like the speedo drive will still be s13 and if you change to s14 ecu to get vct the s14ecu will not read it so you need s14 drive there too .

i have a non turbo sr20 in my s13, when i first bought the car i thought it went alright, but no torque, i put these crazy extractors on from which i bought from a mate who got his sr20de in his sil form japan ages ago and i also did a full exhaust and the car absolutley feels awesome to drive, i smashed my mate who has a vy storm ute six cylinder, plus my car sounds like an off tap na now hahahahaha, do a full exhaust and advance the timing, coilovers, cold air induction, and then ull have fun, oh and also an lsd

This is true, good cheap mods for a DE that will tide you over :).
It'd be 100ish kw at the wheels (roughly speaking) I'd imagine with those mods.

Does anyone know of a place that has done the S14 SR20DE > S13 wiring loom conversion?

I've found an engine I want to buy... :D

I can help you if you want to do it yourself, there isn't much involved.

Although apparently it doesn't work according to wayne bolt on performance, because he's probably done it before, so we might just be wasting our time with faulting the ECU and speed sensor swap overs.[/sarcasm]

PM me if you're interested.

i have put a s14 sr20det not a n/a in s13 180 sx and left the s13 loom and computer and it ran like crap cause of the vct.i then put in the right ecu and still used the loom but then had no speedo because the new s14 ecu didnt read the speedo drive so had to source a s14 speedo drive to solve the drama.
im just trying to help so it might save time or money if you are aware of these sorta things.
its a nissan there is allways a way just little changes are usually the case.

It would have ran like crap if you left the VTC off the whole time, hence why i said we hook it up to switch or get an external controller, or even put the S13 cams in to eliminate it.

If I were going to do another S14 conversion i'd definatly opt for the S13 loom and ECU, just too hard having no S14DE diagrams and stuff, mightn't be that hard for someone who knows what they're doing, i'm just some keyboard warrior :)
