unfortunately the more performance orientated your car becomes, the more it loses it's day to day driveabilty.

I've been in a couple of LS1 commodores that run low 11's with autos. I think it's actually a lot more fun in these cars then the manuals for stright line stuff.

Especially when the manuals in them seem to be designed with the same ergonomics as whoever made the cabin of a Peugeot 206. The thing is an absolute shit to change (I have had a chance to fight a colleague's manual LS1) quickly, in comparison to the Jap 'boxes, and the 6 speed's gearing is designed for low RPM, high speed cruising.

That is true, some of the gerboxes and gearing from the japanese cars are excellent. The 6 speed in the S15 is a pleasure to drive.

The gearbag that's in the non-Evo Lancers is shit too. I've driven one, plus the Proton Satria GTi (which is basically a detuned early nineties Mirage Cyborg), and the gearbox is shit. Its like a toothpick in a marshmallow. You get more feel out of a Sega Rally shifter that's been sitting in an arcade for three years.

The WRX 'box isn't anything to write home about either, from my limited test drive experience.

I've driven quite a few "sports" Nissans, and every one of their manuals have been a pleasure to operate.

And why is it that few other manufacturers can place the pedals in such a similarly easy-to-heel-toe position?

(Its not just Nissan of course. I've driven a friend's Mazda 323, and the shifter / pedals were just as nice to use as the N14 and N15 Pulsars I've driven.)

Heh, Prolly the best mod for an auto gearbox is a manual conversion :P

My bro's old datto gearbox had a magic wand gear stick... Just wave it around and perhaps it'll go into gear :)

haha sounds like my old vw... take a H patern shift and slant it at a 45 degree angle, have a gearbox throw like a truck...then have only about a inch of travel in the clutch.....and let the fun begin
