Post subject:  Motor Magazine Covers NSW HWP Discrimination

There's an article in this month's Motor magazine about the cops' undertakings to combat "street racing". They've got their Exige, and the Bankstown cops drive it around on patrol. The purpose is to use it as an "ice breaker" with hoons, to engage them in conversation.

Reading the article just shows off its typical non-tuner bias. The cops crapped on about drive-by shootings and carjackings before they went out, but in the end all they did was pull over a bunch of Japanese sports cars and defect a guy in an Integra that had lowered suspension and Vault Crystals.

Funny how none of these cops managed to pull over any cars matching the descriptions of the two Commodores who crashed into that elderly couple on the Great Western Highway, killing them both, but they pulled over a WRX doing laps and a stationary RX3.

The article also shits on about how all modifications to a car (including wheels) must be approved by the "Department of Planning and Infrastructure". Since the article is written about operations in Bankstown, Sydney, the context is we're talking about NSW government departments (in WA and NT the name for their version of the RTA is similar to "Planning and Infrastructure"). And if you look at the Dept of Planning's priorities, its (at best) tangentally related to motor vehicles.

Right, like the guys who determine the layout of Sydney have shit all knowledge of cars. They can't even do their proper jobs correctly, if you have a look at the dog's breakfast that is town planning and public transport design in Sydney. Maybe they should worry more about how to get a fucking rail network to service more of metropolitan Sydney on time than people with lowering springs and shitty wheels.

It also totally ignores the RTA's VSI (Vehicle Standards Index) No. 6, which covers light modifications to cars. Wheels up to 25mm wider do not require certification by an engineering signatory, and neither do a host of other mods.

Quality fucking journalism there, guys. Especially from a specialist "enthusiast" mag, that had the gall to publish a "Hot Tuner" edition that actually said what mods did and didn't need to be certified.

And feature advertisements from a variety of car modification companies. I wonder if CAPA's Flash Tuner for the Falcons is legal, or Powerchips? Considering they just sell the box and not a custom dyno tune, I wonder if the product also includes the cost of running an emissions test? Who's promoting "amateur modification" now, you hypocrites?

This one's definitely worth reading at the newsagent's, just for the perspective, but make a stand and don't buy it. Motor, who I generally have a bit of respect for, can go fuck themselves with this one.

the last issue of motor I bought was back sometime in 2000. I got over reading about the latest minor facelift the 'new' commodore had and whether the backseat of a magna was more comfortable than the falcon's and so on a LONG time ago.

why are you even surprised about that article Alan?

I would have thought anyone with a moderate or higher intelligence level would have seen the light years ago. whatever the party line is at the time is what's printed, and whoever throws the most money into advertising with the publisaher wins car of the year. that's the way it's always been, and it's not going to change,no matter how many 'enthusiasts' they upset. in the end,far more 'normal' people BUY the magazine and they want to hear that something's being done to keep them safe in their mediocrity whilst they flick through checking out ads for the latest GT this or SS that.

Justin...

p.s. the latest issue of HPI arrived in my mailbox today. that's mostly worth reading.

Interesting comments guys. I do agree that, like a lot of other political initiatives, a 'hot tuner' crackdown is a knee-jerk reaction to give the general population the sense that something is being 'done'. All this rot which is associated with tuner cars seems to be to flare up like crazy after a sixty minutes article or something, only to fall into the back of people's minds again soon after. Meh.

I've never really read Motor but it sounds as if it follows a similar agenda to Wheels - had to laugh at the comfort of the back seat thing Justin. So true! I gave up on wheels about 6 months ago.

I'd be interested to hear more about this throwing money at the advertiser bit you mention... it's hard to put a finger on but I know what you mean - once Wheels makes their mind up on a car, every subsequent test is a waste of time, because they just find a way to justify why their chosen model is great. Case in point: BA falcon. Wheels COTY 02, and every article thereafter proclaimed it the best family sedan ever... bias free test? Not so sure...

Don't buy the latest zoom then, you'll have already read 75% of the suspension article....

Actually, quick edit on topic for a change. On the news tonight it mentioned there is already talk of an increase in the number of unmarked police cars targeting known "hot spots" after the twin commodore fiasco.

I'll lay a 50 down that they wont be picking on holdens.....

I was watching the news last night about that crash with the street racing and saw the drivers of the commodore and i can tell you for a fact that it aint the typical age group that they define "Hoons" (18-25 year olds) he was more like in his 30's to 40's ,the minute i saw that on the news the first thing i thought was "better stay home this weekend as the police will be out in force targeting imports :( "

no matter what ever happens the import scene will always be the blame of strret racing which is wrong but when cops are to proud to shit on the ford and holden drivers for speeding what are we left to do

re. the street racing commondoors,

it was funny, as mentioned the guys were in their 30's and one was wearing a holden racing team jacket, which was clearly visible on the tv coverage. HRT then released a public statement saying that they didnt condone hoon behaviour and were in support of a police crackdown etc

i hate this new buzz word, hoon.

Yeah.. i've actually been listenin to the radio station 2GB when i hafta drive for work shit, and it's pretty amazing how many people call in complaning about these 'Hoons' and how they're general idea of what this is, is basically P Platers driving in fast cars and going over the speed limit... shame that they really don't realise all the additional over 25-30aged drivers in their 4WD's, Falcodores, and Beamers n such who are usually doing 10-40km/h over the limit almost everywhere, continuously don't check their blind spots when merging etc etc. . . then they always end up with some " special guest " who's from somewhere within the government ranks, to whinge n complain about the same things the callers are on about, and generally in the end it boils down to someone talking about imported cars with turbo's and P Platers driving them, convincing the public what they want them to... *sigh* oh well, should call in and yell at these people one day...

Oh, and did you know, that most of "us" (those who are being targeted with imports/fast cars) run NOS?! omg... fear the quick cars for we have NOS to go MUCH quicker! ..... i found this a fun comment.. how many do you know that run NOS in their daily driver?

put up EVERYONE'S insurance premiums while you're at it. the risk caclulations have to be adjusted to factor this in of course,so it's only fair that the price should rise to cover that and the labour time needed to do the 'work' involved.

Well if anyone has felt the effects of those idiots on the weekend, it would have to be me, I was just minding my own business travelling to work on Tuesday morning, and while sitting at a busy intersection, a highway patrol drove past, pulled over to the side, waited for me to indicate which way I was turning, then chucked a u-turn in the direction I was heading and pulled over to that side of the road, waited and then when I finally was able to turn, flashed his lights and pulled me up. In total, I timed he waited for me at this intersection for just over 10mins. He stated it was a random breath test, then asked me all these really horrible, scary questions about my car, and then he made me get out and show him all the mods, then defected me! Not happy!

Yeah... it's what highway's do, they pull you over for a completely random 'RBT' but then they quickly proceed past that to try and defect you for every little possible thing they can, just to prove how big they are... bad luck mate.. what'd they get you for?
