Speed is detected with in road sensors, yes. It's not radar or laser.

they arent sensor plates

they are a wire buried in the road, i think its called an inductive loop. boomgates use them too

so what are the radars used for then?

also, is it true that they can't detect speeding if your travelling in the opposite direction to that which they're pointed? or is that what the radars are for? i dont feel like making a practical experiment out of this haha

radars are hand held that the cops use, and also the car mounted ones that highway use.

the fixed ones dont use microwaves (if it is microwaves)

I was under the impression that the induction loops were just to tell the camera there was a vehicle coming, thus activating the radar and camera if need be..

my point is that there is both a camera and a radar; the ground loops just tell them to get ready for the vehicle thats approaching.

It makes sense to me; why have the radar going non-stop, if you can leave it in standby and just switch on when a vehicle is approaching?

i was told that that the speed is detected on a fixed camera by the induction loop in the ground as they lay mutiple loops (last time i saw one being installed about 3 or 4 ) which detect the speed over the distance of the loops about 2m. i've see people get around this by swearving aroung the bars into the emergency lanes, road side carparking and turning lanes.

no its not, but thats pretty funny!

the lines cut in the road 'sense' when the car passes over it, there are 3 lines with 'sensors' in them (maybe more on some). it takes your average speed within these lines (they are something like 20cm apart) to gauge your speed.

They are mostly piezoelectric sensors.

Inductive Loops are more the technology that is deployed for picking up cars at some traffic lights, as they are not accurate enough to be used for speed measurment - though you guys are right, they do also use inductive loops along with radar.

How bloody enoying is it when moron's have to slow down to almost 20k's under the speed limit when passing fixed speed camera's.
I have to put up with this nearly every god dam morning on my way to work and it pisses me off.
What are these people thinking, it not like you'll get done for doing the speed limit or even a few k's over

AAAAaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even more annoying are the people who slow down for the camera even though it only gets traffic coming in the opposite direction (you can tell by the markings on the road where the induction loops are placed). Fucking retards. :x
