They will say anything to get the general public on side, it is a growing problem in some places. I think they should just build us a whole bunch of mountain passes and make foam barricades  and let us go nuts there

you know what's funniest? that clip is at least 6years old,and is on a touge in JAPAN.

I've had a local copy on my pc since the 20th of september,2001. before many aussies even knew what drifting was.

Today Tonight should be Yesterday Last Night. old clip, misrepresented to create new publicity and stir the pot a bit more.

Idiots.

Justin...

Edit: I just sent this through to today tonight's website:
Hi,
I saw a segment from a recent episode of your show which was vilifying 'drifting' and 'ratbags' and 'hoons' who drive in this fashion on public roads, and the segment constantly showed a video clip that had been found on the internet showing street drifting on a dark windy road. I would like to inform you that the clip in question is at LEAST 6 years old,and features two JAPANESE REGISTERED cars driven by JAPANESE NATIONALS on JAPANESE ROADS. it is NOT a clip of drifting in AUSTRALIA,by AUSTRALIANS.
I have a local copy of this clip on my pc,which has a file creation date of 20/09/2001. I'd be happy to email it to you to verify if you wish.

I am an amateur drifter myself, and obey Australian road rules, keeping to private property and race tracks when I feel the urge to drift my cars. I do not condone dangerous driving on our roads, and never have.

I ask that in future,if your program is going to attack a group of motorsport enthusiasts,it at least takes the time to properly verify material it takes from the internet to ensure their reporting is accurate and not produced in such a manner as to possibly mislead the general public as this segment has.

regards,

Justin Ferguson.

Well written response, they are just dickheads, they set people up, and manipulate footage to show what they want it to. But we all know the police will do anything they can to control young people when it comes to cars and using popular tv shows is just another way.

I just sent this through to the chaser:

To the gang at the chaser,

My attention was recently drawn to a segment from an episode of Today Tonight which was 'reporting' on the latest in local 'hoon' behaviour,a derivation of motorsport known as 'Drifting'.

Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l53lbanVn3c

The presenter did her best to vilify car enthusiasts throwing in at least 8 separate slurs on them as a whole during the segment whilst referring to a video clip showing illegal street drifting, which they reported as being dangerous to the public at large. the video clip in question is at least 6 years old,and features two cars driven by Japanese nationals,on Japanese roads. there is no connection whatsoever to drivers in this country, although this is inferred constantly throughout the report.

I have a local copy of the clip in question, which I have had stored on my computer since the 20th of September,2001. I can provide a copy for verification if required, and would be happy to do so.

I am an amateur drifter myself, and obey Australian road rules, keeping to private property and race tracks when I feel the urge to drift my cars. I do not condone dangerous driving on our roads, and never have.

In future,it would be nice if this program ever decides to attack a group of legitimate motorsport enthusiasts again, that it would at least take the time to properly verify material it takes from the internet before going to air, to ensure that their reporting is accurate and not produced in such a manner as to possibly mislead the general public as this segment has.

Sincerely,

Justin Ferguson.

and this to Column 8 of the SMH:
