A mate has just bought a MY99 WRX. It had an exhaust etc and was running pretty well. For some reason the A/C drain had been left off and it was running straight into the ECU. The car stopped and blew few fuses. I diagnosed the problem as ECU being dead by swapping with a known good car after checking the wiring, so the car was towed to a workshop to have PFC fitted.

They fitted the new PFC and then claimed the AFM was dead because the pod filter had sucked water!
My gulible mate said yep just get it running.
Now they say hey it needs a service plugs etc.
Again okay go ahead. Ring back again you have low compression on number four its only 50Psi! A rebuild will set you back 9400 bucks :o

He rang me up to ask my thoughts and I basicly said bullshit get the car back to my place and ill check it out.

He told them to he would be down to pick it up and asked if it was drivable they said yeah but it will lack power and idle off.
No worries so I drive him there to pick it up, pay the man and go out to the car park. No hand controller, back inside and ask for it. after some more questions we walk out with the controler.

The car seemed to run fine idled nice reved okay. I followed it home no smoke seemed okay.
Get it home and I comp tested it, bitch of a job but there was not one cylinder on 50psi :o
Going one further I leak tested it, a measly 9% leakage was the worst figure!
I will be giving them a please explain call. They have no idea who I am or what I do for a living so could be interesting conversation.
What the fuck is this industry coming to trying to rip off customers to the tune of 9400 bucks!
I can't do it rip people off how do they sleep at night, besides in a gold plated bed!

Oh can a mod tell me if im aloud to mention the buisiness' name in this post?

i hear you

a workshop ripped off my 90yo grandmother and made her pay 1200 for a service. they did all this shit to the car and didnt ask.

some mechanics are assholes. this guy is going down. half the shit he did i had done before i gave the car back to her.

i hope you give that guy an earful. and make sure he knows he cant get away with shit like that

however, to be on the safe side, get the car comp tested by another mechanic just for piece of mind. not that im saying your test wasnt correct

It has been checked twice on the nominted number four cylinder. Both got the same result :o

There reason was that number four gets the least coolant flow hense detonates the worst :o

Can I mention the local area?

i trust me, or if its something i cant do. ill go to my mechanic that i trust..... mostly :P

but even the ones you trust can sometimes rip you off. its a shit, but how do you really know??

i think its best to find a mate in the industry and have them do the work for you.

Zei is right you never know you take there word for it, Really in thoery you should be able to trust every mechanic but unfortunatly there will always be these types.

These are the same tools that told me the following:

*HKS S13 cams are same as S15 cams. The differing part numbers don't mean anything
*R32/R33/S15/S15 all use the same front brake calipers
*S13 block is stronger than S15 block
*You cannot put bigger than 550cc injectors in SR as the PowerFC can't be tuned for larger than that

This was all in 1 visit!

I argued with them that all the things they said were incorrect and they treated me like an idiot

sometimes its best to research on forums... i find they have been the most helpful...

My MR2 sucked ass wen i bought it... the gears grinded every time it shifted to third...

Took it to a mechanic and they told me 700 bucks for a new gear box..

I did some research and the forums had diagrams on how to adjust the hydrolic clutch... car runs sweet now... like new... and the info was for free...

We are fortunate sometimes too that there are people like Dumhed who post valuable information on forums like this...

There isn't too many so-called performance workshops between Liverpool and Campbelltown...

Shouldn' t be too hard to figure out

Also the time I was in there, their 'mechanic' asked me to remove some injectors from an S13 they were working on cos they couldn't figure out how to do it without breaking them!
