i read in motor magazine about 12mths ago (that issue had an orange falcon on cover) that they dont get on-coming traffic due to privacy laws in nsw. and motor mag is quite reliable.

anyone knows wot the go is now? 12 mths later from the article?

i know this thread is not material for BITCHING FORUM but speed cams are bitches.

anyway....can i blitz past on coming cams or not in sydney?

i DONT think they do, but i cant confirm this.
but usually at fixed speed cameras, there are sensors on the floor usually 3M ahead, usually 2 or 3 black lines , they dont have them on the opposite side of the road so i think u can blitz it. but someone correct me if im wrong

my dad told me this also.. though i dont want to test it out - DO you???

he said red light cameras and speed cameras cant get you on oncoming traffic because of privacy laws - they takea photo of front of the vehicle and hence will include a shot of your face - which is against the law.

from memory it was because of a politician that was caught going through a speed camera, the photo was taken, the photo was mailed to him. the guy was with his mistress. his wife had opened the fine. busted!

well, i know its not really the truth. but it sounds cool :)

but yeah its due to privacy laws. but its funny how there are surveillance cameras everywhere you go..........

thats funny, funnier still if he was wrong and got busted.

thats a risk id rather not take

and i bet all cameras are different too. check the road for signs of cutting

yes. i wouldnt want to be a guniea pig unless i had stolen a car......

some places, for example, like the hume highway @ lansvale AND bass hill, have fixed 70kmph speed cameras, but only on 1 side of the road....

however the signage is on both sides of the road... explain?

the signs are what make people slow down, not the actual camera - so by putting signs on both sides they double the effectiveness of the camera.

You've got to love Internet rumours like the one about the politician. What garbage.

As for cameras photographing you, some will take the photo from the rear of the car, some will take the photo from the front of the car. Some have sensors on both sides of the road and can photograph both directions of traffic. Some cameras are always active and some are not.

You can work out which is which, except for those which may not be active. Explaining each and every variant is a pain in the butt and it is left as a reader exercise to work out for themselves.

Most cameras in NSW will not ping you for travelling 5lkm over the limit, so in reality they shouldn't cause anyone any issue. With the sign markings being clearly visible, if you get done by a fixed camera it is obvious that you have not been paying attention to the road and it's conditions and you deserve the ticket for being a ding-bat.

One little word of caution. In the Harbour Tunnel, there are three (or four) cameras on the entry which are only about 20 metres apart and there are another three (or four on) the exit with the last one being right as you leave the tunnel. Don't think that you are safe just because you can see the opening.

Other myths which need to be dispelled are those about cameras not supposed ot be used on downhill runs. The cameras in the Eastern Distributor are all on the downhill runs, in both tunnels.

Hey,

Brenton is 100% right.

Some will get you, others will not, is it worth risking? I think NOT!

Surely you can restrain yourself for the few moments it takes to pass the camera? :-?

What are you doing speeding on a road with a fixed speed camera anyway? Keep it up and your car will be as useless as mine!

Ive gone past speed cameras face on over the limit and have never been flashed, but as everyone says, better safe than sorry

Now that is very true. Maybe they can increase the penalty for these fools.

In other states the cameras aree not sign posted, and have a lower tolerance. Victoria I believe is pretty harsh.

I've always wondered why these are not sign posted like the rest? Or have i just missed the signs?
