My future mother in law just purchased a water purifier that corrects the natural imbalance in water.

The imbalance is that there is 'too much hydrogen'. This little beauty somehow works on an atomic level to remove a H from H2O and make it HO.

Riiiiight.

Correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding of the matter is that anything other than H2O will no longer be water. Clare tried some and big surprise, tastes and looks exactly like normal water.

Then this:

read OMG's posts, he shuts him down big time.

water is made up of h+ and oh- that are kinda all "held together" by attracting to each other. having too much of the h+ makes the water acidic. (the inbalance relates to pH level - low ph = lots h+, high ph = lots oh-) but tap water hardly has this problem.

as for that thread, if it wasnt bad enough the large markups on what others on ebay were selling it for, the guy didnt really know the technical side much at all...

That sounds very relevant but the specific claim was made that the offending extra atom was removed. Further discussion tells me that the result would be hydroxide, which would be very nasty for the body to have inside of it.

if the extra h+ atoms being removed were to bring the water back to a neutral pH (if it was acidic beforehand) then the resulting water would be neutral (and not hydroxide). just depends how far it claimed to go.

if it still removed h+ from water that was already neutral (or moreso in that direction) then it would have been even worse like you say.

probably just another case of the marketers having not much idea about the product.

What are you going on about NewKleer?

water is 2 hydrogen atoms and an oxygen atom.

hydrogen peroxide is h2o2 ie 2 of each.

heavy water is h3o

OH does not exist on it's own unless as a part of another molecule, and is generally a fairly obvious sign that the something is a base (alkaline), but what about salt? NaOH

Unless there is something else being added to the water (catalyst) to make it react and break down into it's component parts (not likely as water is one of the most stable molecules, you'll probably remember that a hell of a lot of reactions end up with steam as one of the final components) then you wouldn't have a split in the molecule. If something is added then you wont be getting water at the end of it and where's the rest of it gone? Is the reaction endo or exothermic? I could really go for a cup of warm acid right now

i never mentioned anything about h2o2 or h3o. i guess i should have sounded more nerdy (but more correct) and talk about H+ and OH- ions, which water tends to dissosciate easily into when needed (ie, in the presence of impurities like salt).

water, at a neutral ph 7, contains equal amounts of H+ and OH- ions, and probably none would be dissociated if no impurities.

when you add salt (NaCl, not NaOH) for example, the water can easily disassociate into H+/OH- (if it didnt, nothing would dissolve in water). the Na+ ion marries (lightening it up a bit here) the OH-, and the H+ hooks up with the Cl-

if u dissolve HCl (to mke hydrochrolic acid) or NaOH (to make drain cleaner) in water, you get an excess of H+, and OH- ions, respectively. resulting in low ph, and high ph, respectively.

think we're digressing a bit in a bitching forum :)
