From your personal experience, what normally comes out on top? What's better in low-range and top-range? What pulls off the line better and what normally wins in the end?

I'm asking this because I am considering doing a RB20DET conversion in my auto ca18de because RB's are heaps cheaper than SR's.

...and there is a reason for it...

(dons flame retardant suit before continuing)

Regarding the RB's:
they are heavier (which will affect the near perfect weight split of the silvias, its currently about 55:45 F:R, from memory).
Off-boost throttle response is rather lacking (not a concern if you are building a 'beast' may bother you if you want to drive it day-to-day).
Similar power, but the SR is a torquier engine, although this is probably just the turbo, thinking about it.
From memory, fuel bills are a tad nicer on the pocket with the SR as well.

However: As you mentioned they *are* cheaper. always a plus when you don't deal drugs for a living.
they sound pretty nice, although don't know if this changes outside of their 'natural habitat' (based on mates R32)...

I would say, if you could stretch the funds, get an S14 SR20, with T28, which is definately better for the car than the RB, with weight balance, and existing sh!t lining... and will fit a lot easier as well.

then again there is the quasi originality of the Rb... although getting fairly common now... could always go the bank loan and fit an RB25 in there... now THAT would be insane.. and there's only a few of them out there...

Well I ran an RB20DET and whooped it by about 3 - 4 car lengths with my N/A SR20!

Something wasn't right though, coz it should have had close to double the power... It was being pushed though - had a zorst and BOV..

I find it amusing how annoyed the driver was :)

We had two goes. First one I redlined it and dumped the clutch - wheelspin till about 50k and he got about 3 car lengths on me. After that I kept up till about 80.
Next go I did an absolutely perfect launch, and pulled a similar distance on him, and held that lead till about 100...
From what I saw he launched the same both times..
he shoulda killed me as soon as it came on boost though - just like the couple of SR20DETs I've raced..

get an rb25 they are becoming cheaper and are WELL worth the money, they fit easily and will turn your silvia into a tyre smoking monster on 7psi!
just make sure you get some driving lessons for 15psi! no shit they are that good.

There's a thread on the Skylines Australia forum about this, in the General section i beleive. Cam carried out tests last track day on this, so go have a look at the figures. You will be surprised...

hi all i have done the rb20 conversion in my s13 and it is great i have raced a couple of other s13's in my town and have beaten them easily with it,one was a ca18det auto the other was a sr20 turbo manual the auto was no match the sr manual i still beat but it was alittle harder we both launched great ant the sr did get inb front but when the rb builds up on its revs there is no stopping her.

for a ca18de s13 the rb20 or rb25 conversion in my own opinion is the best way to go the extra weight up front hasnt effected the balance of the car as far as i can tell but you do definately notice the extra power.i am not trying to start a war here the sr is a legend motor but there is just something about having a turbo six in a well packaged car.sorry for the long post peoples

Ive chopped two SR20DET cars in the R32... no losses (yet)
And it is basically stock, they were more modified. However might come down to other factors such as driving ability.

Power wise of course, RB is greater than SR. In a 180sx a SR20DET with same mods SHOULD be faster than a RB20DET in a R32. Provided you know what you are doing with it :)
