Hey All,

Did an oil service yesterday and found specs of copper in the oil pan when i was draining it out (not heaps but noticable around the edges of the pan, does this mark the end of my bottom end bearings?

in the past few months there was a timing chain rattle on start up noisy but not extremely noisy, after a few mins of warming up the rattle goes away or when i put it in gear you hear a crunch noise and the rattle is gone, there isnt any knocking noises or sounds when im driving or on idle, the PFC hand controller shows knock levels 6-8 at the most
the car feels and drives normal for now, but i wanted to know is the end for my sr20 about to happen? :(

pretty likely that there's a bearing on the way out.

If you catch it before it gets too bad it's a lot cheaper to fix.
You can get the oil analysed to tell you for sure, which might be a good idea.

How many K's on the engine?
Has it ever been run with low oil pressure (oil filter popped off, etc)?

Hey DH!

thanks for the reply

at the moment i'm not driving the car anymore, so i can decide what i want to do with it from now on.

how would i get the oil analysed?

its roughly 220,000km on the clock.
i have an oil pressure gauge and on idle at the lights its between 2-4kg/cm2 on start up on mornings with the idle higher its usually between 4-6kg/cm2

i have a few options
- its to get a new s15 nismo sr20 engine for $4200 comes with no rocker cover no manifold and no turbo charger.
- rebuild if the condition is still repairable without costing an arm and leg, but how am i going to find out if its repairable without pulling everything out which would probably cost me
- or strip the car of all the parts and sell it as a running motor with bearing on the way out

I know people who use oil analysis services, but I've never had it done personally. A quick google search for "oil analysis" came up with this: http://www.e-monitor.com.au/

Hey All,

been awhile thought i'll do a quick update of things.
so i decided to get the bottom end bearings replaced and the timing chain.
the engine has been removed and pulled apart. the timing chain guides are well worn, not sure if marks on them are normal but they are very distinct, the chain also sags a little compared to the brand new chain (which is tight as!)
the bearings were removed but there werent any signs of cracks/chips not sure how stuffed bearings look but these dont look too bad compared with the brand new ones, there were worn marks of it moving left to right. oddly enough theres only 1 bearing that has marks of it 'scratched' on the outside of it not the inside which is odd.
but other then that the bearings from my untrained eye seem to be in good condition seeing that its a 200k km engine.
at the same time i'm going to change the clutch since it was last changed in 2004 and about to go, as for the turbocharger goes there isnt much shaft play but there are small hairline cracks on it. so while its so easy to remove i thought i'll slap on a new one.

i guess i can un-certify my sr20 from death and see how it goes with the new turbocharger. bearings, chain, front/dump and cat.

thanks for all the help DH!
