Post subject:  Blown Power FC - repairable?

I've got a power fc that someone has blown by mixing up battery terminals when jump-starting a car.

I haven't opened it up yet, but is it easy enough to identify what is wrong and replace the components? Is there anything that blows first that is easy to replace?

Is there someone on these forums (or someone known) who can fix them?

it's possible that it'll be an easy fix. I've fixed ECUs before, but haven't seen a blown PowerFC.

Feel free to bring it when you pick up the car :)

Hi guys,

Attached are pics of the blown component of a Power FC I've got. Does anyone know where these items can be sourced? I think it is a capacitor. Does anyone know if/where an electrical component schematic diagram of a Power FC can be found? I've had no luck online.

Anyone able/capable of repairing it? Or, if someone has a power FC easily accessible and has a multimeter, can someone test the resistance/capacitance of that particular component on theirs?

Thanks
Daniel.

Have been told by a semi-reliable source that it is a 0.1 micro-farad capacitor. Does anyone agree/disagree with it?

I'm goning to go to jaycar and buy a 'green' capacitor and solder it to the board. Anyone think i shouldn't do this?

Why don't you speak to someone at one of those "hole in the wall" computer repair shops.

Look at the component to the left of it, it's a diode. It may be a schottky (high speed) diode.

Capacitors won't explode like that in any fault condition likely to be seen in an ECU.

Chances are that diode is meant to protect an output from voltage spikes, or an input from reverse polarity, etc.

You'd need to trace what it connects to and work out what it's actually there to do - and make sure the same fault is not there when it's reconnected (or it'll blow again, and most likely damage other parts if they are not already)

Thanks for the tips Andrew. I think i might need to find a 'professional' who is willing to work on it.

I can have a look at it when I'm back in the country

Sounds good mate. Let me know when you're back - got some other stuff for you to do too :)
