I was doing an oil change on a redtop S13 RWD SR20DET today. Had trouble loosening the oil filter (using my favourite SR oil filter tool btw - pictured), when suddenly, it gave way and after a quarter turn fell off the mounting thread.

Turns out its the same problem many have had on here before now - a late model SR filter (Z445 - short can) on an early model SR (which should have been a Z442 or Nissan 15208-53J0A - long can).

To make matters worse, not only were the threads on BOTH filter and engine buggered, the thread at the motor end cracked off and landed inside the old filter - FFS!!! At least the oil filter mounting block is only a 4x Allen key job to replace.

Thought I should post these pics to help others visualise the difference betw the two filters and (hopefully) not make the same mistake.

Note difference in thread height - Z445 left and Z442 right. Z442 has a more raised thread (and different thread pitch to Z445)

The ultimate SR oil filter tool (IMHO) - Stanley 997654 from Autobarn

Hope this helps
:)

That difference in thread depth caught a few people out way back in the nissans13 message board days when S13's were only just landing here.

S14 filters on S13 engines occasionally popped off under pressure, and the engine dropped it's guts.

Thankfully ryco knows the difference these days, and it rarely happens anymore, people fit the correct version, most of the time.

All fixed now with a new filter block - and a Z442. Hopefully this thread helps others searching for facts further down the track.
