Post subject:  Brake booster or master cylinder problems?

Hi all,

I have a 180sx non abs and recently bled the brakes however now the pedal goes all the way to the floor, does not even stop the front wheels from being able to be turned by hand with a ratchet on the nuts except when you pump the brakes a few times it gets firmer and works but not too well.

After pumping the brakes with the car off it firms up except if you wait a few seconds and press the brakes again it goes all the way to floor once again. There is also a noise from the bmc/brake booster when you pump the brakes. I cant see any leaks anywhere, checked the bmc under the dash for leaks, nothing there.

I bled the brakes twice as I though it was air in the system. But it still happens, does this sound like the bmc or booster shit itself?

sounds like the master cylinder may have gone bad due to the bleeding (junk builds up in the cylinder and then ruins the seal when you push it all the way down for bleeding)

That'd get my vote too.

I have heard of booster problems that resulted in a very long pedal but the brakes still worked ok.

yeah thats what I thought but wouldnt that mean there would have to be a leak in the system? ie. fluid coming out of the master cylinder?

Have a look inside the firewall where the brake pedal piston comes through

Not necessarily. a blown seal will allow fluid to leak past it,giving a loss of pressure, with no external leakage.

yeah spoke to a brake specialist today and he confirmed it. Bled it again tonight using a different method and 500ml of fluid and its still fucked. time to find a replacement bmc :(
