It is my understanding that S13 chassis' came with both 'red' and 'black' topped SR20s. It was the earlier model SR20s that featured red rocker covers vs black rocker covers of the later model type x 180s. These engines all featured non VCT heads.

Unlike S14/S15's that had OEM VCT SR20s with black rocker covers. These are visually different to ealier SR20s in that the inlet plenum hides the injectors, has a VCT 'hump' at the very front of the rocker cover on the inlet side and has a slope downward toward the firewall.

Hope this helps in deciding upon whether you are to order SR red or blacktop parts.

Note - Rocker cover colour should NOT be used as a guide to establish SR20 type.

Yeah check for the hump,VCP to see if its an s14/s15 blacktop. But if its the 180sx 1994+ blacktop they have different ecu etc to the redtop. But also remember that rocker covers are easily changed. You should check your ecu for the part number and google it. That will confirm what you have. If you have a power fc then check this part number too as they are different for red/blacktop too.
