Hey guys,

I have a 180sx type x 1996, which i got imported, i have a problem where when i start the car it runs fine for 5 minutes almost exactly and then the revs get limited to 1.5k...then i turn the car off and on again and its fine for another 5 minutes. However if the cars been standing in the sun for a while and the body is hot or something, the problem doesnt occur...so its intermittent....any ideas?

I've seen a problem like that which was caused by the alternator not being correctly wired up so the voltage goes too high after a while and the ECU goes to limp mode.

Does it run for longer if the lights are on?

If you can put a multimeter on it and check battery voltage while it's running, or plug in a consult cable you can check it.

Voltage shouldn't go over about 14.5v and should normally be 13.8 when the engine is running.

you probably need to get a consult on it and check all the sensors.

Something like a broken temp sensor can cause this sort of issue, but the time frame would generally be shorter.

Try and unplug your AFM and start and run the car, obviously it will not rev past ~4k but try it.
