Post subject:  180sx rb25det conversion help

alright so for my year 12 automotive project im doing a 180sx and putting a rb25det into it...it will be used as a drift car (ALL funded by my brother), so far its all apart, bought forged pistons,rb26 conrods(machined to fit rb25), tomei valve springs, new intake manifold. The head, block and crank are all getting machined as we speak...bought a crashed r33, stripped it, we put the front crossmember in,with one of the holes needed drilling bigger so it would fit up. All r33 brakes are going on the 180sx, took the brake lines off the 180sx brakes and put them on the r33 brakes, so no modifying is required. The r33 rear end (brakes,axles,diff..basically whole r33 rear end.) is going to be installed onto 180sx...new bushes are being made and drilled for them.

Ok now i've told everyone what me and my brother are doing,i have a few questions.

Iv'e read that rb25 hits the bonnet, but we have new intake plenum so that problem is solved.

The rb25 gearbox (manual) crossmember doesnt fit up? What needs modifying???

I've read that a custom tailshaft is needed? Or can i fit the r33 tailshaft up because im using r33 rear end? i still have 180sx tailshaft, could i take them both apart and mix r33 one and 180sx into one tailshaft? (As they come apart into 2 pieces).

That is all for now, im sure many other questions will arise later in the build.

Thanks alooootttt, Jordan 8)

erh im not sure if the crossmember bolt locations match with the 25 box up to the s13 ( its honoustly been so many years since iv looked at this ) but before you pull ur hair out bolt the rb box mount up then see if the s13 crossmember will go up ( you might have to bend out the mount a fraction for it to slide over s13 cross )...

let me know if that was any help lol =x

Kurtis

P.S
awsome school project to mate i rebuilt a victor 2 stroke for my DT finals xDDD

If you turn the mount around 180° it won't fit - one side is higher than the other.

The auto and manual mounts are opposite though, so you can generally use an auto one if the manual one doesn't fit (I haven't personally done this with an RB25 box though!)

apparently there's one type of 13 crossmember that works, i think it has a C or D on it. From like a CA auto or something. dumhed confirm?

you can cut and shut the tailshaft and get it balanced or pay someone to do it or get a straight one made up, $ though

yeah the plenum will hit the bonnet, if you dont manifold swap you can put spacers on the back of the bonnet and stuff

I would expect an auto S13 crossmember to work, but I'm not 100% sure.

Basically the auto crossmember is the same but the gearbox mount sits a bit further back - so if it looks like the manual one is a bit far forward an auto one should do the trick.

thanks for the input guys, does anyone know where that gearbox crossmember letter is located, iv'e found my ca18 manual one, but cant find the letter corresponding to which one it is? we already have a greddy style intake plenum ready to go on :) im just waiting for the block/crank/head to be machined, and then when i go back to school i will start putting it together! (next week) cant wait, at the moment we have 3 tailshafts, rb25det,sr20det,ca18det, all manual, could u unbolt them in half and use 2 different ends of them?

yeah you can usually swap the ends around (there are different flange sizes though so sometimes you have to swap those too)

You can't for this conversion as the lengths don't work out and centre bearings are in different spots. 33 yoke on s13 tail shaft (CA one preferably as you can sell the sr one intact more easily)
