Can anything be done to a CA to make decent power without putting a turbo on it?

not if you don't want to spend bulk money on it, an even then you're better off with a turbo.

The usual extractors, exhaust, advance timing are the cheap mods with reasonable gains, after that cams and then the returns start to diminish as you throw money at it.

I don't want to start a flamewar, but it's hard enough getting decent power out of a CA18DET.
Reliability is a problem with big power motors.
Look at other setups first. Being a p plater I imagine money is a little hard.
Go for decent suspension etc before power.
Look for mods that will help if you ever go something turbo charged.
Otherwise prepare to spend A LOT of money to get small performance gains.

PS as suggested above if you can find a cheap SR20DE. Ie sub 1000$ for motor loom and box, think of that route for power.

Just my opinion.

Sounds like a great idea!

If I could do it all over again, this would be my plan:
1. Start saving.
2. Slowly build an RB26/30.
3. Get off ps, drop in engine.
4. Destroy all.
5. ??????????
6. PROFIT!

I don't want to sound like a tool either, but I tell all my friends this when they buy cars like ours.
Make a list of all the things you want to do and a price limit you want to spend to do it.
Like 5 stud, R32 GTR brakes etc.
Stick to this list as well it will save you a lot of money!

Sorry just the ramblings of a poor uni student :)

for the cost of an sr20de conversion you'd have your exhaust cams and extractors on the CA.

I don't see the benefit.

You'd get bugger all back for the CA if you could sell it at all, so if it's healthy keep it.

If you'll spend a little money look into putting an s14 sr20de in. Will make just over 100rwkw with pod/catback

Wait till ur off the p's turning a boost contoller up is much cheaper and easier than doing conversions and trying to make power with ur current setup
