Does any one know if you can register a 180sx or silvia with a LS1 V8 or can you even get it engineered for NSW roads?

Best to look up the RTA website and find out exactly what the max capacity you can run is.

I suspect you will be over with a 5.7

use google.
type in "engine swap registration NSW"
find answers.

looks to me like a 1200kg silvia with a mono chassis can go up to a 5784cc NA engine.

so yes. but only just.

I would check yourself before you buy the engine

erhh,
okie i talked to an auto engineer about this in the last 12 months ( actually is a family freind ) we were building a car for a freind that was a BMW E30 325e ( registed factory as a 2.7ltr inline 6 ) the desired conversion was a S50B32 ( 3.2ltr e36 M3 motor ) this is pretty much what i was told by the engineer,

to have it engineered as road legal, you can only increase ur cylinder capasity by 30% meaning if your car is registed as a 2.0ltr you can increase it to a 2.6ltr ( this is for nsw im unsure of other states )

again, id just check with RTA and or by calling a registered auto engineer

hope it helped :DDD

im sure that 30% rule etc all depends on the weight of the vehicle, as stated above if it is over 1200kg or something then you can increase capacity by x3 or something like that.

under 1200kg has its own rules, over 1200kg has its own rules

This is incorrect. It is equated on power to weight as per the RTA PDF.

You can increase your engine capacity less than 15% providing no major structural work is needed WITHOUT the need for an engineers certificate. It's considered an owner certified modification.

However good luck getting a mechanic to pass off on it, or talking a highway patrol officer into that idea.

RTA document Here as posted above.

There are also different rules for commercial vehicles.

I have spoken to a friend who has been though this before to see if he can do it to his Silvia and found out that it is possible and it is legal as the curb weight is 1220 on a Silvia the only problem is he thinks a Lexus V8 :-? would be better...

So let the planing start…

Lexus V8 would be cheaper i'd think, but then you'd have to adapt a manual behind it, the LS1 comes with a big strong (heavy as buggery too) manual box as is.
It's bigger and makes a crapload more powah as well.
LS1 with a cam, intake, exhaust and rom edit will make 260rwkw or so, so it's easy powah.
Like you'll ever need more than that!

there's a couple of people doing manual conversion bellhousings for the UZ series engines now. the most common uses the W5* series gearboxes, although I vaguely remember having seen one with an R154 behind it as well.

the UZ series engines are a lot smoother than the LS1 but don't have the same upgrade potential without major investment. LS1 is bolt on power off the shelf, where the lexus engine will be mostly custom work and will never make the same figures due to being much smaller.

this is one case where you can't beat capacity.

I don't think either option will be difficult.
But it's hard to go past the lightweight LS1 motor for the power it makes.
I would guess that the pushrod LS1 is lighter than the quad cam lexus motor, even though i'm also thinking the T56 gearbox behind it is significantly heavier than an R154 or W58.
