I was driving along the other day and came up to a round about. Went to change down gears and discovered I couldn't. When you pull on the shifter you can feel it vibrating like it's rubbing against something, if you don't apply any pressure to the shifter it feels normal. Clutch etc works normally. Even when the car is stationary or if it's pushed around in gear you can't get the shifter to budge out of gear.

I'm thinking that something in the shifter linkages or selector forks has broken and now it's locked into gear.

Has it happened to anyone else before?

I'm going to pull the box out asap and see what i can find out at least. I have a spare CA box with worn out syncros in the shed i can raid for parts if the forks or linkages are somehow worn out or broken.

Bugger!
I did mine changing up briskly going onto the freeway from a standstill.
Selector fork would be nice, it's easily accessable if i take the extension housing off and i have a spare one!

Anyone else done something similar?

Hopefully just a bent fork but could possibly be a broken hub - seen it happen along with stripped gears, twisted shafts, snapped shafts. I see it in the garage every day along with a heap of gearbox spares lol

If you need any drivetrain parts, or if you want to convert to a properly designed and well priced Z32 gearbox let me know :)

Well i'm hoping it's something i can just slip out and back in again with spares from another box I have here.
Failing that I've got another SR20DET box complete i can throw in.
I'd love a stronger box but time money and effort are not things i'm willing to put into doing it. Stock boxes for $300 every few years (well if this box is stuffed it's my first actually) is fine by me haha.

Got the car up on ramps but that's all so far, this arvo i'll dump the oil and look at it further.

Ok, I got lazy and didn't split the gearbox casing till 10 minutes ago. The culprit was 5th gear syncroniser hub shifting insert. It was sticking out of it's usual spot on an angle and stopping the coupling sleave from sliding along. I popped it back in with a screwdriver and the whole shebang seems to be fixed now (as far as i can tell with the casing still split).

Now the question is why did it do this? I was going through the gears quite briskly, is it possible to overshift and accidently pop the insert out?

Or is the whole lot just worn out?

The box isn't worn feeling, it shifts smoothly enough, doesn't baulk or chunk into gears or anything.

Pic of the part in question.
