I'm spanner checking my entire front end in final prep for dropping the car back off stands and putting it back on the street and finding some things vastly over torqued and some hand tightened (weeeeeeee! it's great buying someone else's unfinished project)

I've re-torqued the lot according to the nissan S13 service manual but what I cannot find (and is one of the more important figures) is for the LCA ball joint to knuckle castle nut, what torque? THere are pretty pics of it in the FA-4 and FA-14 pages, they fastidiously label everything else but the LCA ball joint/knuckle - no mention of torque! Maybe someone has some printed material that has it documented kicking around..

TIA, Matt.

OK so the S14 service manual mentions on page FA-11 that 96-120Nm is the suggested range for the LCA balljoint to spindle however i'm not sure it's a good guide ... comparing it to the S13 service manual part for part the torque settings on the S14 are astronomical.

For example, tension rod bracket to chassis bolts on S13 - 39-49Nm and then on S14- 108-127Nm... wowser.

Anyways, i've tightened them until they feel like the taper is seated in the knuckle properly which is around 90Nm one of them the hole for the cotter pin is inside the top of the castle the other is about 1-2 threads above.. the LCA's and associated ball joints are brand new.. what the.. is this normal??

Argh i'm not the only one.. http://www.ka-t.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=337845

guestimation time.. how uncool is it to put spacers underneath a castle nut so that the cotter pin can actually go through it?

I don't think the factory ball joints run a castlated nut, just a regular one with the split pin above it or maybe i'm thinking the rear?

Maybe confirm you have the same ball joint on each side as the taper is different between s13 and 14 which may account for one sitting higher than the other

Castleated nut on the fronts, do them up tight tight and pin it.
Yeah you'll need a washer under it if you are putting S14 ball joints into S13 hubs :).

To clear things up - I did mean a split pin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split_pin didn't realise that cotter pin could be misconstrued.

It's so weird that one does up to the correct height and the other does not.. I think you're right - i'll have to undo them and get out the calipers to see whats going on comparing left to right.

The other thought I had is that one of the knuckles may be flogged out from the previous ball joint if it wasnt tightened properly or was used with incorrect tapered ball joints previously.

Thanks for the input.
