Hi everyone ive just got my ca18det s13 silvia going and it has like a metal on metal rubbing noise around the turbo but my old man thinks its the cat thats given up inside the exhaust or the automatic transmission on the way out.

My theory is that the wheels inside the turbo are out of balance and are rubbing. When you turn the engine off you can here it spinning but the old man thinks it could be the automatic transmission or cat on the way out.
:-? Puzzling, im taking it to my mechanic tommorow to get it diagnosed and if it is turbo related i'll get a specialist to fix it. Any ideas or suggestions would help a lot thanks.

if the torque converter is installed incorrectly it can make a rubbing grinding noise as it pushes into the back of the engine plate and rubs.

Could be a dead cat as they can rattle. Easy to check by just climbing under the car and hitting it with your hand to see if the core is loose

It could be a loose actuator/flap valve on the turbo.

Yeah got it looked at today by my mechanic the car has been diagnosed and by the looks of it the bearing inside the turbo is on the way out. Today though the noise was coming on and off so its touch and go i think. Luckily for me T25 turbos are fairly cheap to either replace or rebuild so i'll most proably drive it till it gives up.
