Hey all,

I am looking at welding my R200 VLSD as I cant be arsed taking the centre out and apart to get it shimmed. That and I don’t want to have to do it again when it starts to open wheel again. So my question is, can you weld a viscous LSD? And if so htf do you do it so it will last, im assuming that a stick welder with plenty of amps is required, also does anyone have pics of an R200 VLSD internals at all? Or even better does anyone have a properly welded one they want to get rid of?

Cheers
Kirk

I wouldn't bother doing it with the R200 when you can get an open R180 for little to no money.

As for welding it, you can use whatever (arc/MIG/TIG) as long as the welder is powerful enough to penetrate the steel reasonably deeply. I used a 160A TIG the last time I locked a diff. I forget how much power I had it set to though.

I have a locked r180 for little to no money.

Was welded with a mig, but was done without gas so the weld is not the best. Was a bit noisy when I took it out, but still locked up fine.

Let me know if your keen on it, its just holding the backyard in place.

I already have a welded R180 in the car but I am having issues with breaking half shafts so I want to chuck in an R200 to see if this will get rid of the problem due to the diff being wider as I think I am currently stretching my existing halfshafts, so thanks for the R180 comments but not the way I want to go, so anyone know about the R200?

yes you can weld the viscous R200. It's the same as the open diff but with the extra viscous clutch pack in the middle.

I don't see how putting in a larger diameter locked diff if going to solve your breaking of halfshafts issue.

what you really need is a proper lsd.
it might cost a bit to buy now,but by the time you go through a few more halfshafts and try two or three different locked centres and keep having the same issue, you'll have spent nearly as much anyway, and will still have to buy the lsd on top...

slightly off topic, but how difficult is it to put the LSD clutches into a non-LSD diff?? and changing the diff isnt an option due to ratio problems

you'd have to change the whole diff center, but it should be doable as long as there's an LSD center available for it.
Viscous ones also need different output shafts so you may have a problem there.

Yes but I really think that the halfshaft breaking issue is just due to having a locked diff in there. The previous owner had a mechincal 1 way R180 in there and broke 2 halfshafts on the passenger side that I know of, there could have been more, also when I bought the car it had play in the halfshaft on that side as well so this is why I am thinking it could be a halfshaft length problem which may be solved with an R200

isn't welding a r200 like twice as much work as just shiming it

a 1.8mm shim is like $13-15
or get 2 of them

it will locked it for a year or 2

yeah but dont u have to take the centre out to shim it, Ive taken a centre out of a r31 diff before and it was next to impossible to get back in, so had to bring it to a diff guy to get it in 4 me, didnt really want to do that again
