Hey,

Has anyone had trouble with breaking halfshafts in an S13? I broke 2 yesterday, both on the passenger side, not sure what could be causing this as I was drifting and not at a drag strip.

They are all breaking where the U Joint/ Bearing casing, the one which is closest to the diff, it seems to explode and rip the whole casing open, seems to be happening during clutch kicks.

I am also running an R180 diff, would this be shorter in width than the R200 diff, thus causing the passenger side half shaft to be pulled a little causing more stress on the u joint?

This is really pissing me off as I also broke another one, same side last weekend....not cool....car is only running 215rwkw as well, clutch is a heavy but sprung excedy ceramic puck.

Anyone have ideas?

is the R180 locked? if so,that's going to be part of it. take ALL the give out of the diff centre by locking it,and the stress moves to the next link in the chain - the c.v joint.

Yes the r180 is a weldy, but if that was the cause then breakages should be common for mechanical diffs as well, and the number of drifters using them with no breakages of half shafts is huge

the one which I broke first on Saturday did have play in that joint so I wasn't surprised it broke, although half a lap was a bit soon, but the second one which broke had no play in the joint

a mech diff puts a lot less stress on the axles than a welded diff does.

Also, drifting puts a lot of stress on the axles because of the shock load when the tyres are spinning fast and gripping up randomly.

So could this be normal that Im breaking so many half shafts on the same side? I was leaning towards some inherent problem which is causing excess stress on that particular side

it's likely to be a bit of both.

Do you have photos of the broken parts?

unfortunately no photos, they all break in the exact same spot though, the 1st uni joint closest to the diff, the whole bearing case explodes and rips through the boot, both ends seperate so the longest part of the halfshaft is left hanging there flopping around.

is there any major difference's in driveshaft angle. as in 1 side is on massive angle to the other?also the half shaft that goes into the diff. is it bent? maybe on suspension travel is causing a lock up on the inner uni the bang it snap's?

seem's to make sense in my head, duno if it does to you though lol

if the bearing case is coming apart then it could be due to the axle being extended too far (are you using R200 axles with the R180?)

Doesnt appear to be bent anywhere, any this is a locker r180 diff which I have put in it, the previous owner had a 1 way r180 in it and he went through some halfshafts on the same side, at least 2 that I know of

Yes I was thinking the same about possibly being the wrong shafts as when you bolt in that side you need to stretch the shaft as it looks like it is around 1 - 2 mm short when bolting it up.

Is there any different between R180 and R200 half shafts? I was under the impression they were both the same and interchangable

R200 diffs are wider, and usually it's hard to get R180 shafts to go on with an R200 diff, so there is probably a bit of a difference.
If the car is repeatedly breaking the shaft on the same side there's probably something causing it.
A couple of mm should be ok, but it's hard to tell without seeing it.

Pictures of the broken parts would be handy.
