How do I change the steering rack bushes on my S13?

I had a look under the car today, and to be frank I'm not even sure where they are on the rack, let alone how to access them and change them.

Any tips?

Pete

honestly? take it to a shop and have them do it for you. if you're not sure of how to go about it,and don't even know what you're looking at,you probably shouldn't touch it. the car's steering isn't something you want to stuff up.

in addition to the rack bushes, you might want to consider also getting a solid steering shaft bush, and castor rods are the same time. that way it'll only have to be aligned once, and you'll have uber-direct steering afterwards. :D

Fair enough Justin. I couldn't locate them definitely because I didn't have a light and it was dark, but I think I have a fair idea of where they are...

I thought I'd ask because my car is on stands at the moment, and I'm trying to have a crack at a bunch of stuff myself. Insofar, I have changed the tie rods and ends to aftermarket ones, put in a new power steering rack boots, changed the caster rods to aftermarket ones, and I'm nearly done with my S14 front brake upgrade with S14 calipers, RDA slotted rotors, and Project Mu pads...just have to grind a bit of the backing plate off.

On that note, I read something you said in an old thread about removing the olive in the S14 calipers with an 'easy out' drill piece rather than shortening the banjo bolt. I purchased a set of 'easy out' pieces and removed the olive from each caliper tonight, too easy! :)

^ Self tapping screw works aswell.

If you undo the brackets holding the steering rack to the crossmember you will see the steering rack bushes.

I've never suggested to,or have endorsed modifying brake lines or connections.

I would have suggested you obtain the correct lines from an S14 or S15,or have them made.
custom rubber hoses are pretty cheap, around $30 each. custom copper lines are similar money, depending on the length, and you can bend these to shape yourself.

as for the backing plates,I have previously cut and bent them back for extra clearance. put a dozen or so notches around the circumference with a hacksaw or good tin snips, and then reshape with vice grips and some patience.

If you buy Maltech etc braided lines to suit the sumitomos, they tell you to remove the olive. It doesn't detract from their performance or reliability anyway.
