Ok first of all, go to tandy or jaycar and buy yourself one of those tester thing. You know, the ones that light up when there's power. If you have no clue then pm me and I'll post you a picture of mine (which I bought from jaycar for $10 or something).

Shove the end of that to any metal on the car (I usually use the hinge between the door). Now you use it to poke all the wires on the car. Do this while the car is switched off. When there is a cable that lights the test up, that's your POWER cable. Now try it again with the car switched to accessory. Another cable should light the thing up, that's your ACCESSORY cable. Third important cable is your ground, I just shoved it onto any metal part of the car inside the console (Yes I'm dodgy). All the other cables should be your speakers.

If what I said made absolutely no sense then pm me and i'll take some quick photos for you over the weekend.

NOTE: When I hacked up the looms on my car (which was untouched from Japan) there were 2 POWER and 2 ACC cables. Use any 1 set (hence, 1 power and 1 accessory).

I didn't have the metal thing problem because I purchased my last 180 when the cd player installed. And when I sold the car I kept the din bracket.

As for your speaker problem, I go by a really simple and very safe way to test for speakers. But first of all, you'll need to know for certain that they ARE NOT power lines or things may get messy (you can be certain by using that tester thing again). Get an AA or any typical household battery and put any two wires together (1 at each end of the battery, of course). Then listen carefully for a small crackle. I usually get a friend to do the listening because it's hard to judge the rear speakers.
